A step-by-step guide to understanding cards in Indian Rummy

The 13 card rummy game or Indian rummy is one of the most popular card games in India. So, what are the rules when it comes to playing with Indian rummy cards? Well, a traditional game is played with two card decks comprising Joker cards (There is 1 Joker in each deck). The Ace cards are of high rank and the cards on the basis of ranking from low to high in each suit are as follows: 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Jack Queen King Ace.

Ace can be used either as a face card or as 1 when making sets such as Queen King and Ace. In a suit, the value of cards are as mentioned: Face cards (K, Q, J) give 10 points, Ace gives 10 points, remaining number cards in a suit score a rank equivalent to their value, meaning 2 of Hearts is valued at 2 points, 8 of Diamond scores 8 points and 4 of Clubs will score 4 points.

Why is the game played with Indian rummy cards called a draw and discard?

In games involving Indian rummy cards, every player gets 13 cards to form a hand. While a single card is kept face-up to form an open deck, the remainder form a face-down deck. During the game, players either can pick the topmost card on the face-down deck or the topmost card from the face-up deck. After picking one, you have to discard another card. Hence, the name – Draw and Discard.

What is a Joker card in games played with Indian rummy cards?

After 13 cards are given to each player, one card is pulled out of the remaining deck and it is termed the Joker. These cards are called Cut Joker.  Apart from them, there are two specific Joker cards with their picture printed on them. They don’t have any face value but can be substituted for any card.

What is Meld and Show in games played with Indian rummy cards?

To form a hand, each player is dealt 13 cards. Objective of the rummy game is to arrange the 13 cards in sequences or sets such as (6+6+7) or (3+3+4)). Forming two groups called Life is absolutely essential and out of them, one has to be Pure Life( no Joker or Wild card) . After making the groups, submit them for validation. Submitting cards is called Show. When players declare Show, it is called Meld Group. By clicking on it, players have the option to meld entire cards of a single group in one click.

What does the term Dealing imply?

At the start of a round, doling out cards to players is called Dealing. In games played with Indian rummy cards, 13 cards are dealt to each player. 

What is a deck of cards?

According to the rules of the game, the complete set comprising 52 cards plus 1 Joker is called a deck. There are 4 suits of 13 cards each. The four suits are Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts and Spades.

Each suit has a high card Ace; three face cards, King, Queen and Jack. There are also pip cards numbered in their increasing value 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10.1 Joker. The Joker is an extremely special card and can be used to substitute or replace any card. 

What is drop?

During the course of the game, if the player decides to drop out without picking any card in the Indian rummy cards game, then it is termed initial drop and is penalized 20 points. After the game is restarted, if the same is repeated then the penalty will 40 points.

What is Declare? 

After arranging the cards into valid sequences, the players have the right to declare the Indian rummy cards game. Post declaration, the player has to meld his cards and send them in front of others for validation. Players having correct declaration win the game and also receive the penalty points of other challengers.
