Andre Russell looks like an MMA fighter but he’s scared of everything: Dinesh Karthik

Andre Russell is a name that puts fear in the minds of opposition bowlers, and it goes without a saying that he is one of the most destructive batsmen in the T20 circuit. His eye-hand coordination coupled with his muscle power can steer any delivery out of the fence.

The Caribbean giant is someone who plays an aggressive brand of cricket and is known to strike from the very moment and win matches single-handedly for the teams he plays.

The 32-year old Jamaican-born had a dream run in IPL 2019, scoring 510 runs, averaging 56.65, at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 204.81. He struck 4 fifties and by the end of the tournament, he was rightly awarded as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the season, his second title, with the first one in IPL 2015.

Just watching Andre Russell walk-in is scary: Dinesh Karthik

Ravichandran Ashwin, who is currently playing with the Delhi Capitals (DC), asked KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik in his YouTube channel ‘Hello Dubaiahh’ as to how a bowler must prepare in order to face a player like Dre Russ.

“How do you bowl to him? His miss-hit is a six with 8m clearance, decent hit 15m, and a whack is out of the ground. As a captain, how can an opposition bowler bowl to him?” Ashwin asked Dinesh Karthik.

Karthik, who has been captaining KKR for three seasons now, said that although Russ looks like an MMA fighter, he is scared of little things.

“First pray to God. Give him an offering. Pray that he’s in a bad mood and then go for IPL. Then the day, the wicket, the conditions. Just watching him walk in is scary. He comes in like a wrestler. What a build-up he gives while doing that. He’s a brilliant character. With his muscles and all, he looks like an MMA fighter.

But he is scared of everything. He is scared of driving cars, or even when the bus swerves, he gets scared. He said he will never be on a rollercoaster. Never judge a book by its cover. The only thing he isn’t scared of is the ball,” he added.

Andre Russell hasn’t done much in IPL 2020 but once he gets his momentum, he could be a force to reckon with. So far, he has bagged just a couple of wickets scored 11 runs in the game against Mumbai Indians. He didn’t get a chance to bat in the concluded match versus Sunrisers Hyderabad.

With a win and a loss under their belt, Kolkata Knight Riders are currently occupying the fifth spot in the points table and will play their next match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on September 30 in Dubai.
