BAR vs ATH, La Liga 2021/22: MPL Preview, Predictions, & Fantasy Team

In their encounter against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday night, Barcelona will be hoping to extend their undefeated record in La Liga to ten games at the Camp Nou.

The Catalan giants are now in the fourth position in the rankings, 15 points behind the league leaders Real Madrid, while Athletic are in eighth place, two points behind sixth-placed Villarreal, going into the next round of games.

Following two successful away trips, Barcelona returns to Camp Nou this weekend after defeating Valencia 4-1 in the league the previous weekend and defeating Napoli 4-2 in the second leg of their Europa League knockout round playoff tie on Thursday to advance 5-3 on aggregate to the next stage of the competition.

This season, Xavi’s side is not in the running for the La Liga title, as they currently sit in fourth place in the table, 15 points behind leaders Real Madrid. However, they are only four points behind third-placed Real Betis, and they will almost certainly aim for a top-three finish this season, which would not be a disaster given their early-season struggles.

According to reports, Barcelona’s hierarchy is prepared to support Xavi in the summer transfer window after being pleased with his performance as a manager. The team has also gone undefeated in the league since the start of December, winning five and drawing four of their past nine matches in the top division.

With seven wins, two draws, and two losses from their 11 home league games this season, the Catalans have amassed 23 points. They will face an Athletic team that has lost only twice on the road in Spain’s top division, accumulating 17 points.

After drawing 1-1 with Athletic in the rematch in San Mames earlier this season, Barcelona won 2-1 when the two teams met at Camp Nou the previous campaign.

Athletic, on the other hand, will enter this weekend’s match on the strength of a 4-0 victory against Real Sociedad, with goals from Dani Vivian, Oihan Sancet, Inaki Williams, and Iker Muniain putting the club ahead of their rivals.

Athletic moved up to eighth place in the league, only two points behind sixth-placed Villarreal, and there is no doubt that the Basque side will be aiming for a Europa League spot after the regular season.

Athletic have won three of their previous four games in Spain’s top division, and they have only lost one of their past six games overall during this fine run of form, so the visitors will come into this weekend’s match with a lot of momentum going into it.

Another Marcelino-led team, Valencia, is in the Copa del Rey semi-finals, having drawn 1-1 with them in the first leg of their last-four encounter, with the second leg scheduled to take place at the start of March.

However, as previously stated, the Lions, who finished 10th in the previous season, have only lost two of their 13 away league games during the 2021-22 campaign. However, they have not avoided defeat at Camp Nou in Spain’s top flight since September 2018, and they will undoubtedly be considered underdogs going into this match.

Team News:

Barcelona News: Dani Alves is ready to play for the first time since being dismissed against Atlético Madrid on February 6. This is because the 38-year-old Brazilian was serving a two-match domestic suspension at the time of his exclusion from the UEFA team.

He might take over at right-back for Sergio Dest, who had been filling in for him.

Ronald Araujo and Gerard Piqué are the most probable starters. The improvement in the calibre of Barça’s attackers is the primary cause for their recent resurgence.

Adama Traoré, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Ferran Torres comprised the front three for Napoli after they arrived in January, and that might be the case once again in this match.

Athletic Bilbao News: Marcelino’s players have had a week to prepare for this match, unlike their opponents, and they must make the most of this advantage if they are to win.

Oihan Sancet came off the bench to score in the derby and might continue to do so if Raul Garcia and Inaki Williams are retained as the team’s strikeforce.

Asier Villalibre, who is well known for playing the trumpet on the field after Athletic defeated Barça in the 2021 Supercopa Final, will also be a substitute in this game.

At the opposite end of the field, Daniel Vivian, who was picked over Yeray Alvarez and Unai Nez to join Iigo Martnez at centre-back, might stay in that role.

Barcelona possible starting lineup:

Ter Stegen; Alves, Araujo, Pique, Dest; F de Jong, Busquets, Pedri; Torres, Aubameyang, Gavi

Athletic Bilbao possible starting lineup:

Simon; De Marcos, Martinez, Alvarez, Berchiche; Zarraga, Vesga, D Garcia, Muniain; I Williams, Sancet

Barcelona is playing with newfound enthusiasm at the moment, thanks to the addition of new players who have had an instant effect.

Aubameyang is on fire at the moment, while Adama Traore has looked completely at ease in his new surroundings. Ferran Torres has also made a strong impression.

To defeat them again, Bilbao will have to pull off an astonishing feat of athleticism and mental toughness.
