The Carabao Cup 2021-22 semifinals stage will see Chelsea FC travelling to their London neighbours Tottenham Hotspur FC for the second leg on January 13, 2021. The other match will see Liverpool FC host Arsenal FC at the Anfield stadium on January 14 in the first leg after the previous fixture was postponed owing to Covid-19 concerns.
Chelsea do have an upper hand after their comfortable 2-0 lead in the first leg but an in-form Antonio Conte’s side does have the potential to overturn the deficit. The Blues could see a number of players return to the side for this crucial clash.
N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva might be fit to resume play after being in isolation for Covid-19. Defenders Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso are also in contention to start after Thomas Tuchel rested them for their FA Cup win over Chesterfield.
Tottenham, on the other hand, will be without the services of Eric Dier, Steven Bergwijn, Heung-min Son and Cristian Romero for the crunch clash.
Liverpool’s tie with Gunners was supposed to be their second leg but due to a covid outbreak in the Reds camp, the game had to be postponed. On the back of their win over Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup, Liverpool will be confident coming into this game while the North Londoners are still recovering from their shock loss against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup.
With Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita out on Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) duty, Jurgen Klopp will have a tough time selecting his first eleven. Trent Alexander-Arnold contracted Covid while Divock Origi, Harvey Elliott and Nathaniel Phillips are currently on the sidelines with injuries.
For the Gunners, both Granit Xhaka and Emile Smith Rowe are uncertain for this game and it remains to be seen whether they make it to the playing XI or not. Defender Gabriel Magalhães has served his suspension and will be back in the heart of the defence while full-back Takehiro Tomiyasu could also be back in the fray. Star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is on AFCON duty and will miss the match.
