Match: Delhi Capitals Women vs Mumbai Indians Women, (DC-W vs MI-W, Match 7, WPL 2023)

Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians women will be up against each other in the seventh match of the  Women’s Premier League 2023. The only two unbeaten teams in the WPL so far will meet at Dr DY Patil Stadium on Thursday, March 9. 

The Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians occupy the top position on the table with four points and an insane net run-rate of 5.185. Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals are second with a net run-rate of 2.550. 

Delhi Capitals hammered Royal Challengers Bangalore in their first game by 60 runs before beating UP Warriorz by 42 runs in the second outing on Tuesday evening. Lanning was magnificent with the bat yet again, smashing 70 off 42.

Jemimah Rodrigues made 34* off 22 while Jess Jonassen blasted 42* off 20 to power the total to 211/4. Jonassen took a bit of a beating with the ball but claimed three crucial wickets as they restricted the opponents to 169. 

Mumbai Indians obliterated Gujarat Giants by 143 runs to kick off the tournament. They then battered RCB women by nine wickets in another dominant display. Hayley Matthews was the star of the show with both bat and ball.  

Mathews bagged 3 for 28 while Saika Ishaque continued to impress with 2 for 26. Amelia Kerr also picked two wickets as they bowled out RCB to 155. What followed was a carnage from MI batters. Matthews smashed 77 not-out in just 38 balls while Nat Sciver-Brunt struck 55* off 29, chasing down the target in 14.2 overs.

Dr DY Patil Stadium is an outstanding venue for batting. New ball seamers find some assistance but once that fades, it’s all about batters. Three matches have been played here so far in the WPL, with the team batting first posting 207, 169 and 211. Expect another runfest in this match.  

The weather in Mumbai is expected to be clear and warm on Thursday evening. There has been some rain in Mumbai recently but it shouldn’t be a big issue. The temperature will be around 28° C in the evening.

Delhi Capitals have a settled unit. Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma have been terrific at the top while Marizanne Kapp, Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey have done a good job as well. The bowling attack of Jess Jonassen, Kapp, Shikha Pandey, Radha Yadav and Tara Norris has also been in good form.

Like Delhi, Mumbai also have a set line-up. Hayley Matthews has been terrific at the top while Nat Sciver-Brunt, Harmanpreet Kaur and Amelia have also fired. Their bowling unit is even more potent, with Sciver-Brunt, Issy Wong and Pooja Vastrakar as the pace options and Matthews, Kerr and Saika Ishaque forming a terrific spin attack.

Nat Sciver-Brunt has looked in terrific touch in the WPL, scoring 23 and 55 in two innings while also picking three wickets. She is one of the most valuable players in T20 cricket, with over 5000 runs at 30 average and 120 strike rate while also claiming 180 wickets. Sciver-Brunt is a top C/VC option here.
