DEL vs CHN – What to expect:
After narrowly missing out on what could have been their maiden Indian T20 League title in the last edition, Delhi are looking determined to go all the way this time around. They have by far been the best team on the league stage.
Rishabh Pant’s men won 10 of their 14 matches, which placed them at the top of the table. They started off their UAE journey with two back-to-back wins, but then lost their third match of this leg against Kolkata.
The men in blue then again won two back-to-back matches, before succumbing to Bangalore in their previous match. In Qualifier 1, they will take on Chennai, who finished second after winning 9 of their 14 matches.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s boys started off well by winning all of their first four matches of the second leg. But in the last three matches, Chennai have not looked like themselves, and have ended up on the losing side in all of those matches. They will need to rectify their mistakes ahead of the all-important clash, as a place in the final is at stake.
Pitch Report of DEL vs CHN
The Dubai International Cricket Stadium surface has swung both ways in the second leg of the Indian T20 League. Batters enjoyed their time out in the middle in the first few matches, while bowlers then dominated the next set of fixtures. The last match, however, was again a high-scoring one. It can be said that anything around 160 will be a competitive total here. This is a venue where toss plays an extremely significant role. All of the last six matches played on this ground has been won by the team batting second.
Delhi – Expected XI and Team News
Though Delhi lost their previous outing against Bangalore, it is highly unlikely that they will make changes to their team combination. Marcus Stoinis is still nursing an injury, and though Ripal Patel did not get enough balls to show his batting abilities in the last match, he bowled three overs and conceded only 22 runs. As he provides Delhi with a sixth bowling option, he is expected to keep his place in the playing XI, benching the Aussie batter Steve Smith.
Delhi Probable XI – Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (c & wk), Shimron Hetmyer, Ripal Patel, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Avesh Khan
Chennai – Expected XI and Team News
Unlike Delhi, Chennai have some pondering to do in terms of their ideal playing XI, as they lost their third consecutive match in the previous outing against Punjab. Robin Uthappa had a poor game as he was dismissed for 2 runs, and he can make way for Suresh Raina, provided the latter is fit. Dwayne Bravo was taken to the cleaners in the last match, and while Chennai have an alternative ready in fellow West Indian Dominic Drakes, Bravo is likely to retain his place because of his experience. Josh Hazlewood was among the few Chennai bowlers who did not get a beating in the last match, and hence, he is likely to play in this match as well.
Chennai Probable XI – Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, Robin Uthappa/Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Dwayne Bravo, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Josh Hazlewood
Head to head record of DEL vs CHN
The head-to-head record between these two teams is inclined in favour of Chennai. The Yellow Army have beaten the team from the capital city on 15 occasions, while Delhi have got the better of Chennai 10 times. Recent results, however, paint a different picture. Delhi have won all of their last four matches against Chennai.
Team Delhi – 10
Team Chennai – 15
DEL vs CHN Qualifier 1: Five players to watch out for in the Qualifier 1 of the Indian T20 League 2021
Here we take a look at five key players you must pick in your MPL fantasy XI:
Shikhar Dhawan: Batter, Delhi
Time and again, Shikhar Dhawan has proved why it is a mistake to write him off because of a few bad performances. He has been Delhi’s highest run-getter in this tournament, with 544 runs in fourteen matches. In the last match against Bangalore, the opening batter played a good hand of 43 runs, while he has scored three half-centuries in this edition of the Indian T20 League.
Avesh Khan: Bowler, Delhi
Avesh Khan made headlines for the wrong reasons in the last match against Bangalore, as he conceded a last-ball six, which helped Bangalore secure the win. But like Dhawan, it will not be wise to judge Avesh Khan on the basis of one poor performance. He is Delhi’s highest wicket-taker in this tournament, with 22 wickets to his name. In the four matches before the match against Bangalore, the 24-year-old picked up 8 wickets.
Ruturaj Gaikwad: Batter, Chennai
Given the way he is playing at the moment, Ruturaj Gaikwad could be one of India’s better batters in the upcoming years. The Chennai opener has scored 533 runs, which includes one century and three half-centuries. Though runs have not come from his bat in the last two matches, he scored 186 runs in the three matches before that.
Faf du Plessis: Batter, Chennai
To be the champions in this tournament, a team should have a strong opening pair, and Chennai’s opening pair is arguably the very best in the competition. Alongside Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis has also scored runs for run. The South African is Chennai’s highest run-getter with 546 runs in fourteen matches. He has scored five half-centuries.
Shardul Thakur: Bowler, Chennai
Be it Test, ODI or T20, Shardul Thakur is showing that he can produce match-winning performances in every format of the game. He is Chennai’s highest wicket-taker, having picked up 18 wickets in fourteen matches. He picked up 3 wickets in his last match against Punjab, and in his last five matches, the lad from Maharashtra has picked up 10 wickets.
