English Premier League: Know history, winners list and top scorer from every season

English Premier League winners and top-scorers from every season

The English Premier League is the top-tier football league in England with 20 teams participating in it every year. It has a relegation system wherein the bottom three clubs at the end of every season gets relegated, while the top four get a chance to play in the UEFA Champions League.

After the Football League First Division operated for 104 years as the top-tier league in the country, a super league with 22 clubs was formed from 1992-93 onwards to be known as the English Premier League. While there were multiple reasons for this move, one of the main reasons was the lucrative television rights deal that offered to telecast the best clubs’ matches to the nation.

The initial 22 clubs were – Arsenal, Aston Villa, Blackburn, Chelsea, Coventry, Crystal Palace, Everton, Ipswich, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Norwich, Nottingham Forest, Oldham, QPR, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Tottenham and Wimbledon. Four years later, the number of clubs in the league would be reduced to 20.

The move had proven to be a masterstroke as it managed to strike a £304 million deal with Sky and the BBC in May 1992. The viewership has since grown exponentially with the English Premier League today getting broadcasted in 212 territories and 643 million homes, with a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people across the world.

Manchester United have been the most successful club in the English Premier League, winning the tournament a whopping 13 times with Sir Alex Ferguson in charge. The Red Devils won the league eight times in the first 10 seasons itself.

Interestingly, the Premier League has seen a new set of dominant sides in every decade since its inception in 1992-93. From the early 1990s when the likes of Newcastle United and Manchester United were haggling for power to the late 1990s when North London club Arsenal FC gave Manchester United a run for their money, the Premier League has never been one-dimensional.

The power dynamic changed in the 2000s when cash-injected Chelsea FC came into the picture and won consecutive league titles with a flurry of high-profile signings. The same blueprint was followed by Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour, who roped in some of the biggest superstars in world football to win four Premier League titles in the last nine years.

Liverpool FC and Leicester City FC were the only two clubs to win their maiden Premier League titles in the last decade, which has been otherwise dominated by the Manchester clubs and Chelsea.

After Ferguson, Arsene Wenger was one of the most successful managers in the Premier League, winning it three times. However, more than winning three titles, the French manager is widely applauded for the change in philosophy he brought to English club football. The others to win the Premier League title thrice are Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.

Quite interestingly, no English manager has ever managed to lift the Premier League title so far.

Despite Manchester United dominating the English Premier League back then, it was Newcastle United’s Alan Shearer who remained the Premier League top scorer for three consecutive seasons in the early 1990s. The Englishman also remains the highest scorer of all time in the Premier League.

The next striker to dominate the league with his scoring abilities was Arsenal’s Thierry Henry. The Frenchman ended up as the highest scorer in four seasons – a feat no other striker has managed to attain since. Tottenham Hotspur’s 28-year-old Harry Kane has been the top scorer in three different seasons so far and is hopeful of breaking that record.
