FCG vs MCFC, ISL 2021/22: MPL Preview, Predictions, & Fantasy Team

When Mumbai City FC takes on FC Goa in an Indian Super League (ISL) match at the GMC Athletic Stadium in Bambolim on Saturday (February 26) night, they will be looking to move one step closer to securing a place in the semifinals of the competition.

The Indian Super League tie match is part of a weekend doubleheader. It is a big game for both sides, with regard to their different set of aspirations. The hosts are playing for pride, while the visitors want to win to stay in the top-four race, in order to qualify for the playoffs, to defend their title.

The first leg of the tie, which was the first meeting between the two teams, ended in a lopsided victory for Mumbai in the end. During the time since, the seasons of Mumbai and Goa have taken polar different paths, with the former strongly in contention for a semi-final position and the latter out of the running entirely.

Defending champions Mumbai City FC have 28 points from 17 games, and a victory would bring them equally on points with ATK Mohun Bagan, and more significantly, it will keep them ahead of Kerala Blasters FC, who are in fifth place with 27 points from 17 games.

After beating FC Goa on Saturday, Mumbai will face Kerala in what might be a virtual shootout for a spot in the semifinals. Des Buckingham’s wards can start to take control of the situation by winning their match against Kerala. The Mumbaikars have gone undefeated in their past five meetings with the Gaurs.

Ahmed Jahouh, the midfield lynchpin, has been out injured for some time, and when questioned about his availability, he declined to comment. FC Goa has nothing to lose as they sit in ninth place in the table with 18 points from the same amount of games as they did last season. It was their last game that they were defeated by league leaders Hyderabad FC, and head coach Derrick Pereira will be hoping that they can finish the season on a strong note.

This season, Jorge Ortiz has been the lone bright spot for Goa in what has been an otherwise disappointing campaign. Ortiz has eight goals and five assists in 14 appearances with the Goa this season. In addition, this is just the second time in eight seasons that Goa has failed to qualify for the final four.

The most significant win for FC Goa against Mumbai City occurred on November 17, 2015, when the Gaurs defeated the visitors 7-0.

Between October 2018 and February 2020, FC Goa has scored five goals in a single match against Mumbai City on three separate occasions.

Since the start of the 2020/21 season, Mumbai City has gone undefeated against FC Goa. The matches have either concluded in a tie or a victory for the Islanders.

Mumbai win: 7

The Gaurs will be without a few players against Mumbai City on Saturday, according to FC Goa assistant coach Clifford Miranda, who says they would be absent owing to injuries or positive COVID-19 tests.

Following the results of Ahmed Jahouh’s scans, Des Buckingham verified that the midfield maestro is not suffering from a major injury. Later on, though, it will be established whether or not the Moroccan will be involved in the following game. Aside from him, the manager will have the luxury of selecting from a pool of players who are all physically fit.

FC Goa (4-2-3-1): Naveen Kumar (GK); Seriton Fernandes, Ivan Gonzalez, Anwar Ali, Aibanbha Dohling; Edu Bedia, Princeton Rebello; Makan Winkle Chothe, Alberto Noguera, Brandon Fernandes; Jorge Ortiz.

Mumbai City (4-2-3-1): Mohammed Nawaz (GK); Rahul Bheke, Mourtada Fall, Mehtab Singh, Vignesh Dakshinamurthy; Lalengmawia, Vinit Rai; Lallianzuala Chhangte, Cassio Gabriel, Bipin Singh; Igor Angulo.

The two squads come into this crucial match in drastically different shapes and sizes. Mumbai City is currently ranked fourth in the current form table, having collected 10 points from the last fifteen points available. If they want to finish in the top four, they must maintain their current momentum. Because they have won three of their past four games, Mumbai comes into this match with a lot of confidence, and they are the overwhelming favourites to win. Since the beginning of the season, Goa has struggled to gain any ground, winning just four points in their past five matches. Their season is deteriorating into a stale squib, and they are just playing for pride at this point in the campaign. We believe Mumbai should prevail, but Goa, who is not under any pressure, may be a formidable opponent.

In two of the past five meetings between the clubs, both sides have scored a touchdown. Goa has only maintained one clean sheet in their past five matches, while Mumbai has only kept two in their last five encounters. As a result, Mumbai has scored in four of their previous five road games, compared to Goa, who has scored in four of their last five home games. We believe that with both sides hitting the back of the goal on a frequent basis, it may be worthwhile to bet both teams to score here.
