Which Batsman Has Scored Most Runs in IPL History?

Who has scored most runs in IPL Tournament

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the biggest domestic T20 league globally and has achieved cult status in the 13 years of its existence. Be it Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, AB de Villiers, Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, or Chris Gayle, IPL is where all superstars descend. Along with such a high batting standard, run-scoring comes synonymously. But who is the batsman with most runs in IPL history?

Virat Kohli currently leads the race for most runs in IPL history with 6081 runs in 200 matches at an average of 37.44, which includes 40 half-centuries and five centuries. Kohli has been a run machine for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He is the only batsman to have played 200 IPL matches for one franchise and is their leading run scorer.

Shikhar Dhawan is second on the list for the highest run-scorer in IPL followed by Suresh Raina. Among the overseas exports, David Warner has the most runs in the Indian Premier League, with AB de Villiers behind him.

Here is a list of the top five players with most runs in the history of IPL.

1) Virat Kohli – 6283 runs

Team(s): Royal Challengers Bangalore

Virat Kohli has been an absolute rock for Royal Challengers Bangalore right from the inception of IPL. Currently the Royal Challengers Bangalore team captain, no other batsman has more runs in IPL history than Kohli. In 207 matches, he has scored 6283 runs at an average of 37.39 and a strike rate of 129.94. This includes 40 half-centuries and five centuries, four of which came in a single edition back in 2016. It comes as no surprise that Kohli has scored the most runs in IPL history.

Kohli has made RCB into a very successful team and is the face of the unit. He won the actual orange cap award in 2016 and has consistently churned out runs for RCB. Kohli is the overall leading run-scorer in the IPL and for RCB.

2) Shikhar Dhawan – 5784 runs

Team(s): Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, Deccan Chargers, Mumbai Indians

This second most runs in IPL belong to Shikhar Dhawan, who has played for four IPL teams. His most successful stint came with Sunrisers Hyderabad, for whom he played 85 matches, scoring 2518 runs at an average of 34.49. He also has good returns for his current team, Delhi Capitals (1859 runs in 55 innings) and Deccan Chargers (969 runs in 29 innings). The left-hander turned out for Mumbai Indians in only 15 matches, where he averaged 16.5.

In all, Shikhar Dhawan has scored 5577 runs in 191 IPL innings, averaging a healthy 34.84. He has amassed 44 half-centuries and 2 centuries in the IPL.

3) Rohit Sharma – 5611 Runs

Team(s): Deccan Chargers, Mumbai Indians

The most successful captain of the most successful team in IPL history, Rohit Sharma’s career changed for the better when he moved from Deccan Chargers to Mumbai Indians. He has led Mumbai Indians to a record five titles and has been a force to reckon with the bat as well. The MI captain is fourth on the list for most runs in IPL history having smoked 5611 runs in 213 matches at an average of 31.17. While his record for Deccan Chargers (1170 runs in 45 matches) was good, with Mumbai Indians, Rohit Sharma has been top-notch, having scored 5611 runs in 208 matches.

4) Suresh Raina – 5528 runs

Team(s): Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Lions

For the longest time, Suresh Raina simultaneously held the record of playing the most number of matches and scoring the most number of runs in IPL history. However, he did not feature in the 2020 edition of IPL, by virtue of which he has slipped down slightly on both lists. The southpaw has played all of his matches either for Chennai Super Kings or the now-defunct Gujarat Lions.

In all, Raina has featured in 205 IPL matches, in which he has scored 5528 runs at an average of 32.51 with 39 half-centuries and one century to his name. For Chennai Super Kings, Raina has scored 5528 runs in 200 innings, while for Gujarat Lions, he scored 841 runs in 29 innings.

5) David Warner – 5449 Runs

Team(s): Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad

The only batsman to have crossed the 500-run barrier in every IPL season since 2014, David Warner is truly an IPL GOAT! The left-handed opener has been part of 150 IPL innings in which he has slammed 5449 runs while averaging an astounding 41.59, including 50 fifties and four hundreds.

Warner started his IPL career with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), but at Sunrisers Hyderabad, he came into his own. He led the side to a title win in 2016 and has been a constant in the Sunrisers Hyderabad unit since.

Warner has flourished the most against Punjab Kings in the IPL, against whom he has scored 943 runs in 20 matches, followed by Kolkata Knight Riders (915), Royal Challengers Bangalore (754), Mumbai Indians (661) and Chennai Super Kings (539).

Conclusion – Most Runs in IPL

There are a few names, such as AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle and MS Dhoni who are not behind and with IPL 2021 not too far away, they will want to get into the top five list of the highest run scorers of the tournament. Surprisingly there is no one from Rajasthan Royals or Punjab Kings in the top 10 list of the highest runs by batsmen. Will someone from the franchise enter the top five in the years to come?
