I firmly believe the selectors should stick with Prithvi Shaw: Michael Hussey

Prithvi Shaw had a forgettable outing with the bat in the day-night Test at Adelaide Oval and as result, there’s a strong possibility that he could be dropped for the second Test in Melbourne. The opener scored a duck in the first innings and added merely four runs in the second innings, with similar modes of dismissals on both occasions.

The right-hander had poor performances in the tour matches against Australia A and it was anticipated that his colleague, Shubman Gill, who came up with impressive knocks of 43(58) and 65 (78) in the second practice Test, would be picked ahead in the playing XI for the first Test.

However, the team management faith in the Mumbai cricketer ahead for the opening Test of the four-match series.

Team India could muster only 36 runs in the second innings, their lowest ever total in Test cricket history, and eventually lost the match by a margin of 8-wickets as the Aussies chased the 90-run target.

Selectors should show some faith in Prithvi Shaw: Michael Hussey

Criticisms have been hovering around Prithvi Shaw following his performance in the first Test, however, Australian batting legend Michael Hussey has come out in support for him, who believes that the youngster is under immense pressure.

Hussey firmly believes that team India should persist with Shaw for the upcoming Boxing Day Test in Melbourne and even cited Australia opener Joe Burns as an example, who had a dry run in the First-Class cricket but bounced back with an unbeaten fifty in the second innings in Adelaide.

“I think that selectors should show some faith in Prithvi Shaw. Yes, He didn’t get any runs in this Test match but it is one Test, against some quality bowling of a difficult pitch to bat,” Hussey told ESPNCricinfo.

He added “Joe Burns was averaging less than 7 in FC cricket. The selectors showed faith in him. He got out cheaply in the first innings but he slowly got his conference back, worked his way through it and you see the character of the guy and he ended up scoring 50 not out.”

Hussey proposed that Shaw would find it comparatively easier to bat amidst the conditions at Melbourne Cricket Ground where there isn’t the same bounce and pace offered like Adelaide Oval. Further, the selectors should show faith in the 21-year-old Mumbaikar.

“For Prithvi Shaw, find out about his character. Show that faith in him, give him that belief and tell him ‘look, we are backing you’. The Melbourne pitch will suit him a lot more. It certainly won’t have the same pace and bounce. He is obviously got enormous talent,” said the cricketer turned commentator.

“What it does is that it sends a great message to the rest of the team. It is like ‘Look guys, even if you have a bad Test here or there, we are not going to lose faith in you’. We know you are good players and we will back you. I firmly believe that selectors should stick with Shaw despite not looking in great touch in the Test match,” the 45-year-old added.

The second Test between India and Australia will commence on December 26 at MCG.
