I only focus on my game, never think of playing like MS Dhoni: Sanju Samson

Sanju Samson has taken the 13th edition of IPL by storm, notching two fifty-plus totals in the games played so far. He is averaging over 75 and striking at a mammoth rate of 214.86.

He is, without an iota of doubt, going through a golden run in his career, with his knocks helping his IPL team – Rajasthan Royals – grab victories in two matches that they have played so far.

Against a comparatively experienced MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings, Sanju racked a 32-ball 74 (1 four, 9 sixes) that pushed the Royals to 216 in 20 overs ; a game they won by a margin of 16-runs.

In the second match versus Kings XI Punjab, the Kerala-born hammered a 42-ball 85 (4 fours, 7 sixes) and played a major role in chasing 224 runs – the highest successful run chase in IPL history.

And rightly so, he was awarded the Man of the Match in both these games.

No one should try to play like MS Dhoni: Sanju Samson

Samson’s rip-roaring exhibitions in the first and second matches got him the adulation from Congress MP Dr Shashi Tharoor, who drew his comparisons with wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni, while former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir rated him as ‘the’ Sanju Samson of Indian cricket.

However, Samson cleared the comparisons and mentioned that he never thinks of playing like MS Dhoni.

“I am sure that no one can and no one should try to play like him. It’s not at all easy like MS Dhoni, so leave that aside. I never think of playing like MS Dhoni. He is a legend of Indian cricket, a legend of the game.

“I only focus on my game, what I can do, how I can do it best, and how I can win matches,” added the Kerela cricketer.

Samson clearly stated that his current focus is to win matches for his team in the coming games in IPL 2020, and not overthink to get the attention for the national selections.

“I maybe, I maybe not. The only thing I know is I am in good form, my only dream is to win matches for my team, any team I play. My focus is on the IPL right now.”

The 25-year-old had recently mentioned how interaction with Indian skipper Virat Kohli during a gym session helped him strengthen his inner drive for the next ten years of cricketing career.

“When I was in the gym with the Indian team, I met Virat Bhai. I keep on asking him different things. When he asked me how many years you are going to play and I said 10, he told me that then give everything to these 10 years and you can have your favorite food from Kerela after that. So, I became really dedicated to giving my best for the next 10-12 years,” said Samson, who is currently the highest run-getter for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2020.

As of present, Steven Smith-led Rajasthan Royals are seated at the second spot in the points table, with 2 wins in as many matches, 4 points, and an NRR of +0.615.
