IND vs WI, 2nd ODI: Talking points from Ahmedabad

India have won yet another bilateral series against West Indies by winning the second ODI of the ongoing three-match series by 44 runs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead. Batting first, the hosts put up 237 runs on the board with the help of Suryakumar Yadav (64), KL Rahul (49) and Deepak Hooda (29). Chasing 238, West Indies got off to a good start before Prasidh Krishna picked up four wickets to help India win by 44 runs. After a disappointing start to 2022 in South Africa, this is the first series win of the year for the Rohit Sharma-led side. Here are all the major talking points from the second ODI.

Suryakumar Yadav’s unique record

Suryakumar Yadav was the standout batsman for India in the second ODI, hitting a fine knock of 64 off 83 deliveries. When he crossed 30 runs, Yadav, who made his 50-over debut against Sri Lanka in July last year, became the first batsman in the world to register a 30-plus score in all his first six ODIs. His scores in his first six ODIs are 31*, 53, 40, 39, 34* and 64. Three batsmen to have done the same in their first five ODI innings are Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman and Netherland’s Ryan ten Doeschate and Tom Cooper.

Yadav was well supported by KL Rahul from the other end, who missed a half-century by just one run. A large chunk of India’s total was scored by the duo.

Virat Kohli fails to get going again

In the opening ODI at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, former India captain Virat Kohli was outdone by a short-ball ploy from the visiting bowlers. Kohli scored just 8 runs off 4 balls before walking back to the dugout. He didn’t fare any better in the second ODI, which was also his 100th ODI at home. Kohli scored 18 off 30 balls before being caught behind the stumps by Shai Hope off Odean Smith’s delivery.

For one of the world’s best batsmen to be dismissed caught behind in an ODI led to several opinions. Talking on Star Sports, former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif said that it was he couldn’t believe Kohli was caught behind in white-ball cricket. “He had got out while trying to pull in the previous game. In this match, we saw that his foot didn’t come forward in time. He was dismissed in a similar fashion against James Anderson in England but I can’t believe he was caught behind in white-ball cricket,” Kaif said on the mid-innings show. “Kohli would have hit it for a boundary towards mid-off in his heydays. It seems like he’s low on confidence at the moment,” he further added.

Virat still the boss in home ODIs

With the 18-run knock in the second ODI, the fans’ long wait of seeing Kohli score his 71st international century has further extended. But despite the dismal knock, Kohli continues to remain in record books. He has 5020 runs in 100 ODIs at home which is the most by any batsman. Next to Kohli is Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 4245 runs in as many home matches.

Rishabh Pant the opening batsman

Viewers were surprised to see Rishabh Pant, who bats in the middle order, open the batting alongside Rohit Sharma in the second one-dayer. Pant became the 12th Indian wicketkeeper batsman to open an ODI innings. This was because the team is experimenting with a few roles ahead of the next World Cup. KL Rahul has done well for India in ODIs as a middle order batsman, which is probably why he wasn’t asked to open alongside the Indian captain. Shikhar Dhawan was also a part of this series but he tested positive for Covid19 and is thus sitting out. In Dhawan’s absence, the management tried Pant at the top but the movie didn’t pay too well, as the wicketkeeper managed only 18 runs off 34 deliveries before being sent back in the 11th over. With Rohit Sharma having confirmed that Dhawan will be back for the final ODI, Pant will be back to his original batting position.

Deepak Hooda’s maiden ODI wicket

Deepak Hooda took his maiden wicket in international cricket on the fifth ball of his very first over in the second ODI. Hooda bowled a full-length delivery to Shamarh Brooks who tried to loft the ball over the long-on but was caught by Suryakumar Yadav. The all-rounder made his debut in the first ODI, where he scored an unbeaten 26 and was not utilised as a bowler. In the second ODI, he contributed 29 runs with the bat while one wicket for 24 runs with the ball.

Prasidh Krishna’s match-winning spell

Chasing 238 to win the game and level the series, West Indies got off to a good start. Openers Brandon King and Shai Hope hit four boundaries in six balls off Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj to take the visitors to 31 for 0 in seven overs. But then struck Prasidh Krishna in the 8th over, which began the West Indian collapse. Krishna sent back King, Darren Bravo, Nicholas Pooran and Kemar Roach to pick up four wickets in nine overs while conceding only 1.33 runs per over.

Rohit Sharma was also all praise for the young bowler after the game, saying that he had not seen such a spell for India in a long time. 4/12 is the fast bowler’s best figures in ODIs. His previous best spell of 4/54 came against England last year. And he now also has the most wickets by any Indian bowler in the first six ODIs – 15.

Shamarh Brook’s fighting knock

Shamarh Brook’s top-scored for the West Indies with a knock of 44 runs that was laced with two fours and as many sixes. Akeal Hosein was the second-best performer with 34 runs. But the famed trio of Nicholas Pooran, Jason Holder and Darren Bravo failed to swing their bats, which eventually cost the visitors the game and the series.

India unstoppable against the West Indies

This is the 11th consecutive bilateral ODI series win for India against the West Indies. With 11 consecutive bilateral ODI series wins, India have matched Pakistan’s record of 11 consecutive series win against a team. Pakistan have won 11 consecutive series against Zimbabwe from 1996 to 2021.
