David Warner – The Overseas IPL GOAT!

IPL Fantasy Stats David Warner

From being picked into the Australian T20 side without even playing a single first-class match to becoming one of the most controversial figures in the country’s history, David Warner has seen it all. However, there is little doubt that Warner is one of the best all-format players ever to put on an Australia shirt.

Warner was picked out of obscurity into the national T20 side, where he scored 89 off 43 balls against a mighty South Africa side on debut. He quickly rose through the ranks and became one of the best T20 players in the world.

Warner was drafted into the ODI and Test side as well shortly after. He had an excellent start to his Test career when he became just the 13th Australian opener to carry his bat through an innings in just his second Test. His aggressive style of play and ability to play both pace and spin in an equal measure meant Warner scored runs worldwide.

From destroying a listless Indian attack at WACA to scoring centuries in South Africa, Warner made it big in no time. However, off-field issues constantly hampered his career. In June 2013, Warner was fined AU $11,500 and dropped from the national team after a brawl with Joe Root. In July 2013, Warner, playing for Australia ‘A’ had an on-field altercation with South Africa ’A’ wicket-keeper Thami Tsolekile.

Warner made a U-turn by becoming the highest run-scorer in Ashes 2013-14, scoring 523 runs in five matches. He followed it up by scoring 543 runs in a three-Test series against South Africa and carried his impeccable run through the year.

Warner was never far away from controversy, but what happened during the 2018 tour of South Africa is something he can never erase from his career. During one of the Tests against South Africa, cameras spotted Cameron Bancroft rubbing the ball with sandpaper. Details later emerged, and Warner, alongside Steve Smith, was named part of the leadership group that knew about the alleged cheating. Bancroft was banned for nine months while Cricket Australia handed Warner and Smith one-year bans each. Warner lost a lot of his sponsorship deals as well as his IPL contract for a year.

The grafter that Warner is, he came into the side after the ban hungrier and has since been a critical component in the Australian unit. He seems to have toned down his aggression and looks a much more compact cricketer as well.

Warner has carved himself a massive fan-following in the IPL. He played for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the first five years (2009-2013), but it was at Hyderabad where he won the crowd. Snapped up for INR 5.5 crore ahead of IPL 2014, Warner established himself at the top of the order. Warner was handed over captaincy by the Hyderabad franchise in 2015. In IPL 2016, under his leadership, Hyderabad won the IPL for the first and to date only time. Warner remains the captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad side.

Warner has been one of the best overseas batsmen in the history of the IPL, with 5254 runs in 142 matches averaging 42.72, which includes 48 half-centuries and four hundreds. He is currently the third-highest run-scorer in the league and will look to add a few more runs come IPL 2021.
