Team Gujarat: Champions of the West

Team Gujarat Introduction

Gujarat was one of the two new franchises added to the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. Despite getting very little time to assemble a team, the team went on to win the title in their debut season.

Gujarat had quite unsurprisingly picked homeboy Hardik Pandya during the 2022 mega auction. The other picks – Rashid Khan and Shubman Gill also played a crucial part in taking the team home in 2022.

After a super successful 2022 edition, the Hardik Pandya-led side had another great season in 2023, reaching the final, before eventually losing it to Chennai.

As for the team management, Team Gujarat appointed former Indian cricketer Ashish Nehra as the head coach. Gary Kirsten is the mentor of the team as well as the batting coach. Former Indian cricketer Aashish Kapoor was named as spin bowling coach while Vikram Solanki is the director of cricket.

CVC Capital Partners bagged the rights for Team Gujarat. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held an e-auction in late 2021 for the rights of the two new franchises – Ahmedabad and Lucknow. CVC Capital Partners, a British private equity and investment advisory firm, earned the rights for the Ahmedabad franchise with a second-highest bid of INR 5,625 crore.
