The eighth edition of the Women’s Asia Cup is all set to get underway from October 1st in Bangladesh. Seven teams will compete against each other once, with the top four teams advancing through to the semifinals.

The tournament, returning after a gap of four years, will kick off with the hosts and the defending champions Bangladesh women taking on Thailand women. The second match will witness India women and Sri Lanka women go head to head at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The six-time champions India women are once again favourites to win the tournament. The tournament will be played in the T20 format just like the previous three editions.

The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side recently toured England, where they lost the T20I series by 2-1 but then whitewashed the hosts in ODIs. Earlier they had won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Sri Lanka women last played T20 cricket in the Commonwealth Games, where they finished at the bottom of Group B with three out of three defeats. Earlier they had faced India at home in June, losing the three-match series by 2-1.

Wicketkeeper-batter Kaushani Nuthyangana, left-arm seamer Tharika Sewwandi and allrounder Madushika Methtananda have been drafted in.
