IPL 2020, DC vs MI: We weren’t up to the mark, says Shreyas Iyer on the 9-wicket loss

Delhi Capitals (DC) had a forgettable day at work as they lost to Mumbai Indians (MI) by whooping 9-wickets in Dubai on Saturday. Batting first, DC could score just 110 runs in 20 overs and the target was eventually chased down by MI credits to Ishan Kishan’s fiery 73* off 47 deliveries. With 7 wins in 9 matches at one stage in IPL 2020, in a turn of events, the Shreyas Iyer-captained side has lost their last four matches, and could possibly miss out on the playoffs if they fail to stamp a victory in the forthcoming feud.

“Obviously, we fell short of reading the wicket. We were not up to the mark right from the start and those wickets in the powerplay took down the momentum from us.

It was important for a few of us to come and build a few partnerships but it happened in bits and pieces. There are lots of flaws to be pointed out to, but we’ve got to believe in ourselves and be strong-headed, also be positive,” Shreyas said in the post-match presentation.

Delhi Capitals had won the toss and opted to bat first, however, the top and middle-order collapse negated their chances of posting a competitive total on board. Shikhar Dhawan registered his third duck of the season while his partner, Prithvi Shaw, scored 10 off 11 deliveries. Marcus Stoinis (2) and Shimron Hetmyer (11) came in at No 5 and 6 respectively but failed to render an explosive finish.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer, who batted at No 3, was the highest run-getter from DC, scoring 25 off 29 deliveries, followed by Rishabh Pant (24, 29b), and the duo added 35 runs for the third-wicket stand.

Talking about the pitch conditions, Shreyas added, “You can’t anticipate how it is going to play right from the start. Openers being there, it was important to get a good start. Once you get the momentum, you can build on later. I feel 150 or 160 was a good total on such wickets.”

We will keep things simple: Shreyas Iyer

DC will play their last league match versus Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on November 2 in Abu Dhabi. This would be their second faceoff of the season with DC having won the earlier encounter by a margin of 59-runs courtesy of the ripper exhibitions from Marcus Stoinis (53*, 26b) and Axar Patel (2/18).

When asked for any changes in the side for the must-win game, Shreyas replied that they haven’t thought about it and wouldn’t try to overthink their strategies.

“We will have to think about it and be fearless in our approach. We will keep things simple and will not try to think much. It is going to be a do or die for both teams depending on how RCB plays tonight.”

Delhi Capitals are currently at the 3rd spot in the points table with 7 wins in 13 matches, 14 points, and an NRR of -0.159.
