IPL 2020: Yuzvendra Chahal has been brilliant for RCB, says Gautam Gambhir

Former Indian cricketer and two-time IPL winning captain with KKR, Gautam Gambhir has lauded RCB star cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal for his performances with the ball.

He mentioned that while there are constant talks about bowlers, namely Kagiso Rabada, Jofra Archer, Pat Cummins, and Rashid Khan, Chahal, in this edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been on the spot for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

The 30-year-old Haryana born is second to Delhi Capitals (DC) pacer Kagiso Rabada (12 wickets) in the race of highest wicket-takers in IPL 2020, with 8 scalpings in 5 matches, averaging a mere 18.00, an economy of 7.57, and best figures of 3/18 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Dubai.

We should be talking about Chahal more: Gambhir

Not to forget, the leg-spinner has got the most number of wickets taken by an RCB bowler in IPL history, grabbing 109 wickets in 88 matches while averaging under 23.

“Yuzvendra Chahal has been brilliant. We keep talking about Rashid Khan, Jofra Archer, Kagiso Rabada, Pat Cummins, but Chahal in IPL, especially in this season, has been right up there,” said Gambhir on ESPNCricinfo T20 Timeout show.

He added, “We should be talking about Chahal much more. There is more hype around other bowlers. But he has done brilliantly for RCB.”

The Men in Red-faced their second defeat of the season against the table-toppers Delhi Capitals (DC) on Monday in Dubai.

Opting to bowl first, the Virat Kohli-led side conceded 196 runs in 20 overs, with off-spinner Washington Sundar as the most economical performer for his figures of 4-0-20-0. Chahal conceded 29 runs and remained wicketless in his three overs of play while Moeen Ali (1/21), who replaced Adam Zampa, was expensive in the couple overs that he bowled.

In the pace department, Mohammad Siraj  (2/34) bowled well and was followed by Isuru Udana (1/40). Navdeep Saini had an off day at work as he failed to muster a wicket.

In the batting department, openers Devdutt Padikkal (4) and Aaron Finch (13) couldn’t weave the match-winning partnership as has been the case in the matches they’ve won this season. Skipper Virat Kohli, who found his form with a blistering 72* in the previous match, was once again the highest run-getter, scoring 43 off 39 deliveries with two fours and a six.

The middle and lower middle-order comprising Moeen Ali (11), Washington Sundar (17), and Shivam Dube (11) couldn’t light up the contest and eventually led to the Bangalore-based franchise losing the game by 59 runs.

In the points table, RCB is seated at the third spot with 3 wins in 5 matches, an NRR of -1.355, and will play their next game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on October 10 in Dubai.
