ISL best goalkeeper: Know top 5 custodians of the Indian Super League

The crown of the ISL best goalkeeper 2022 is currently with Kerala Blasters’ Prabhsukhan Gill, after the 21-year-old Punjab custodian performed tremendously to help the Tuskers reach the ISL final. The best Indian Super League goalkeeper of all time, however, would be current ATK Mohun Bagan player Amrinder Singh.

Indian football has seen some of the grittiest goalkeepers in its history like Subrata Paul, Subhashish Roy Chowdhury, Peter Thangaraj and more. The current crop of Indian goalkeepers has maintained the legacy as well, with the Indian football team still managing improbable wins against higher-ranked oppositions in international football.

With the Indian Super League providing the significant pool of players to the national team, below is the best five goalkeepers in the Indain Super League of all time.

Amrinder Singh (ATK Mohun Bagan FC)

Having joined the Pune Academy at an early age, Amrinder Singh became a part of their first squad at just 18 and has since been loaned out to major ISL clubs. It was ATK who had first brought him in 2015, which was followed by Bengaluru FC in the I-League. Amrinder’s sharp performances in the loan spell saw BFC getting him permanently for the 2016-17 I-League season. After winning the Federation Cup with Bengaluru in 2017, ISL side Mumbai City FC loaned him for a year in 2016, as the Punjab goalie ended up becoming the best goalkeeper that season. MCFC made his deal permanent the next season as Singh went on to become the club’s most capped player over the next five years. ATK Mohun Bagan FC came calling in the summer of 2021, and Singh has been their mainstay in the ISL as well as in the AFC Cup.

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (Bengaluru FC)

Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is the only Indian footballer to play in the UEFA Europa League, a feat the custodian achieved while playing for Norwegian club Stabaek. Starting his footballing career with Kolkata giants East Bengal, Sandhu moved to Europe at an early age. By the time Bengaluru FC bought him permanently in 2017, he was a finished product and he has since been playing a significant role for the Blues between the sticks. Over the past five seasons, Sandhu has played 92 ISL games and kept 32 clean sheets. He is also the no. 1 goalkeeper for the Indian national team.

The Indian Super League has seen underdogs posing a challenge for the play-offs almost every season. If it was NorthEast United FC last season, this season saw as many as three non-favourites – Jamshedpur FC, Kerala Blasters and Hyderabad FC – finishing in the top four. Teams like FC Goa, Mumbai City FC and Bengaluru FC couldn’t make the cut.

And the list below of the top five ISL goalkeepers from the 2021-22 season rightly reflects where the proceedings changed course. Apart from ATKMB’s Amrinder Singh and Mumbai City FC’s Mohamad Nawaz, none of the big teams saw their goalkeeper making it to the top five.

The Tueskers finished fourth in the league stages before defeating Jamshedpur FC to reach the final. Gill won the golden gloves by finishing the season as the best goalkeeper last season as he kept seven clean sheets and pulled off 38 saves.

Laxmikant Kattimani (Hyderabad FC)

ISL 2021-22 winners Hyderabad FC will have Laxmikant Kattimani a lot to thank for after the goalkeeper pulled off as many as 48 saves on 19 ISL matches to help his side lift the trophy. Having won the Indain Super Cup with FC Goa on previous occasion, Kattimani had all the prior experience to become the safe hands for the Nizams on this audacious journey, although he ended as the fifth best goalkeeper in the ISL 2021-22 season with three clean sheets in the entire season.
