ISL Points Table: How it works and ISL 2022-23 league standings

The ISL points table visually represents the current state of the football clubs of the ongoing Indian Super League season. It considers the number of wins, losses, draws, and the ratio of goals scored and conceded by teams to rank them. A total of 115 matches (110 league games and five playoff/knockout matches) are played in a single ISL season.

On Friday, March 3, 2023, Hyderabad FC defeated Kerala Blasters 1-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to qualify for the playoffs from the second position on the ISL points 2022-23 table.

The Nizams sit after Mumbai City FC are followed by ATK Mohun Bagan FC in the third place. Bengaluru FC, Kerala Blasters and Odisha FC occupy fourth, fifth and sixth places.

How does the ISL 2022-23 points table work

The primary aim of every team during the league stage is to finish within the top six positions of the points table, which in turn helps them to qualify for the ISL playoffs. The added incentive for finishing at the top of the points table in the league stage is the ISL League Winners Shield. The club finishing as the table topper gets an automatic qualification in the AFC Champions League group stages.

How are points obtained in ISL?
  1. A club is allotted 3 points for every win in the league stages.
  2. 1 point is given for a draw, which is shared by both the teams drawing the match.
  3. For a defeat, a club is allotted zero points

However, the points table is not this simple and the calculation gets complicated as the season progresses. With each team playing 20 matches during the league stage, the number of points earned by two or more teams overlaps numerous times. In such a scenario, the following criteria are used to determine the clubs’ positions.

  1. If two teams are tied on the same point, then the team with more points in head-to-head between the clubs get the higher position.
  2. If the head-to-head doesn’t separate the two teams, then the team with a superior goal difference in matches played between the two clubs is given priority.
  3. If the goal difference in their concerned matches cannot determine the position of the two teams, then the team with more goals moves to the higher position.
  4. In the unlikely scenario that the goals scored by the two teams fail to separate them, then their goal difference in the entire league is taken into consideration.
  5. The process continues with eventually the team with the highest fair play ranking is considered to stay above.
  6. The last resort is a draw.
