LAZ vs NAP, Serie A 2021/22: MPL Preview, Predictions, & Fantasy Team

Sixth-placed Lazio and Scudetto hopefuls Napoli will be looking to escape a Serie A hangover on Sunday, 27th February evening after both teams were knocked out of Europe in the middle of the week.

After being knocked out of the Europa League by Porto, the hosts have gone undefeated in six domestic games, while their opponents have gone four games without a victory which consists of a 4-2 loss to Barcelona in the Europa League.

Lazio was held to a 2-2 draw by Porto in the second leg of the playoff round on Thursday, losing the game 4-3 on aggregate and crashing out of the Europa League before reaching the last-16 round.

With their Coppa Italia loss to Milan earlier this month, and subsequent elimination at the Stadio Olimpico, Roma effectively ended any remaining hopes of winning a trophy this season.

Although the Aquile’s first-leg defeat in Portugal and a 1-1 draw at Udinese last time out in the league mean they have not won in three games. Napoli, on the other hand, has won 19 of their last 25 home league matches.

There is no doubt about the potency of the Capocannoniere’s front line. Led by Ciro Immobile, who has scored 19 goals so far this season and is on the verge of becoming his sixth 20-goal season in Serie A.

Without a doubt, former Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri – who was responsible for both the Biancocelesti’s brilliant attacking play and their worryingly porous defence – will be keen for Immobile to go full tilt to reach that milestone, as Lazio looks to exact revenge on the Biancocelesti for a 4-0 defeat in the reverse fixture in November.

When looking to close the eight-point gap between Lazio and Napoli, recent history is in Lazio’s favour; they have won their past two home games against the Neapolitans without conceding.

Although they previously inflicted a historic six consecutive losses at the Olimpico against their capital opponents, Napoli have been less successful at home in recent weeks, and they head to the Eternal City with their fortunes in a state of flux.

Even though Luciano Spalletti’s squad has amassed the most points and surrendered the fewest goals in Serie A in 2022, the championship hopefuls have drawn their past two league games against Inter and Cagliari and were defeated by Barcelona on their turf in midweek.

The Partenopei were knocked out of Europe with a tame performance in the second leg of the ‘Maradona Derby,’ which was played at the stadium that now bears the name of the Napoli legend. The Partenopei’s spirits were crushed during the first half of the match, and they were eventually eliminated 5-3 on aggregate after conceding three goals in the first half.

Napoli, like Lazio, has been eliminated from both the Europa League and the Coppa Italia in rapid succession. As a result, they must now focus only on Serie A, where they are just three points behind the league lead after draws for both the Milan teams on Friday night.

In the wake of a weekend in which their fellow Scudetto contenders were unable to capitalise, the Azzurri were unable to capitalise on their opportunity last Monday: they were denied a chance to move into first place and returned home with only a point from their trip to Sardinia, and were forced to rely on Victor Osimhen’s late equalising header to even salvage a 1-1 draw.

As a result, Spalletti will be eager for his team to continue an illustrious recent tradition in their next matchup against Lazio: despite being denied wins in the capital for the past two seasons, Napoli has won eight of their last ten league meetings with the Italian side, scoring a combined total of 27 goals in the process.

After drawing 1-1 with Udinese Calcio in their most recent league encounter, they may opt to make a few unforced changes to their starting lineup.

Napoli possible starting lineup:

Ospina; Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Koulibaly, Rui; Demme, Ruiz; Politano, Zielinski, Insigne; Osimhen

If they win this weekend, Lazio will move up to 6th in the Serie A standings, one point ahead of Atalanta and one point closer to the Champions League positions. While Napoli is now in third place, we anticipate a tight and competitive 90 minutes between the two teams in Rome.

Lazio and Napoli have scored at least three goals in four of their previous seven encounters, including league and cup matches. We anticipate more of the same on Sunday when the teams meet again. Five of Lazio’s previous six matches in all competitions have had over 2.5 goals scored, while Napoli’s midweek meeting against Barcelona saw a total of six goals scored.
