LIV vs INT, UCL 2021/22: MPL Preview, Predictions & Fantasy Team

Liverpool will host Inter Milan at Anfield on Tuesday evening in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 contest, with the Reds holding a commanding 2-0 lead from the first leg.

At the San Siro, Jurgen Klopp’s team scored twice via Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, leaving the Scudetto holders with a tough uphill climb to keep their hopes of winning the European Championship alive.

As a result of San Siro no longer being the intimidating venue it once was for English clubs, Liverpool did not need to be reminded twice that they were on their way to a place in the Champions League quarter-finals by stamping their authority on the Nerazzurri’s turf and taking control of their own destiny.

Liverpool made it seven in a row after finishing first in their group with a perfect record of six victories out of six. Firmino headed home from Andy Robertson’s cross in the 75th minute before Salah completed the scoring with seven minutes remaining.

Even though Klopp tries to minimise the significance of the EFL Cup and their progress to the FA Cup quarter-finals, the Liverpool faithful’s quest for a quadruple is unquestionably still alive.

In Saturday’s Premier League game against West Ham United, the VAR analysts were out in force, with Sadio Mane just about managing to stay onside and tap home from Trent Alexander-ball Arnold’s – whether it was a shot, cross, or pass is something only the right-back knows – as Liverpool kept the pressure on league leaders Manchester City, who remain six points clear after thrashing Manchester United in the derby on Sunday.

The win over the Hammers was Liverpool’s 12th straight victory in all competitions. The Reds have a chance to become the first English team in history to win their first eight games of a single Champions League campaign, and it is unlikely that they will fail to do so at Anfield, where they have not suffered a defeat in more than a year.

The only way for Inter to go to the final eight this week is for them to put on a goal-laden display. Fortunately for Simone Inzaghi, his attackers did just that in an exciting warm-up win against Salernitana.

Lautaro Martinez scored three goals in that 5-0 thrashing, marking his first goals in the league since December. Edin Dzeko, who is 11 years his older, capped the sweep with a quickfire brace of his own before the 70-minute mark, bringing his side’s tally to five.

In a season in which Martinez was struggling, Inter was also struggling, going on a four-game losing streak in which they failed to win or even score one goal before teaching Salernitana a footballing lesson. A second consecutive Scudetto is not out of the question for Inter, who are the reigning champions.

It has been seven years since Inter Milan has advanced to the last eight of the Champions League. However, in the competition’s history, only one team has ever managed to come back from a two-goal deficit in the first leg at home to advance – Manchester United against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2018-19 season.

The 2-0 victory at San Siro was Liverpool’s third win and third clean sheet in a row against Inter in the Champions League, and if an incredible Merseyside comeback is to be started, only performance as clinical as Friday’s would be enough for the visitors.

Thiago Alcantara, Roberto Firmino, and Joel Matip have all returned to training after extended absences, but it is still unclear if Brazilian forward Firmino will be able to make his way back into the team.

Jurgen Klopp’s most difficult choice this season might be deciding whom to start alongside Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. Luis Diaz has impressed since joining in January, but Diogo Jota has also returned to full fitness.

Nico Barella was absent for the first leg and will be absent for the second leg as well, as he serves the second match of his suspension following a red card received against Real Madrid during the group stages.

Having missed Inter’s resounding victory over AC Milan over the weekend, Ivan Perisic will have to show his health before the team’s journey to England.

Liverpool possible starting lineup:

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Keita; Salah, Jota, Diaz

Inter Milan possible starting lineup:

Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, Bastoni; Dumfries, Vidal, Brozovic, Calhanoglu, Gosens; Dzeko, Martinez

Following their early-season downturn, Liverpool has won their past 12 matches in all competitions, demonstrating their ability to turn around their season. In recent weeks, Jurgen Klopp’s men have had some success, and they will put up a confident performance this weekend.

Inter Milan has also performed well in Italy this season, but they have yet to find their footing in Europe. As a result, Liverpool has been the superior side this season and has the advantage coming into this game.
