LIV vs NOR, EPL 2021/22: MPL Preview, Predictions & Fantasy Team

On Saturday 19th February, Liverpool will host relegation-threatened Norwich City at Anfield, bringing together two clubs at the opposite ends of the Premier League league.

The Reds go into the meeting with an unblemished record in all competitions so far this calendar year, but they will be up against a Norwich team whose survival prospects have been greatly bolstered in recent weeks.

Because of Manchester City’s unrelenting tempo, every Premier League game for Liverpool right now is practically a must-win game, and this is especially true of home games against struggling opponents.

Jurgen Klopp’s team will face ahead of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City for the first time in this Premier League season in 2022, giving them the opportunity to slightly up the pressure ahead of the latter’s encounter against Tottenham Hotspur in the evening start on Saturday.

The Reds may get a favour from a Tottenham team that has already defeated Man City this season, but first and foremost they must fulfil their half of the agreement to cut the gap on the league leaders to six points – if only for a little period.

Liverpool’s game in hand, as well as the fact that they still have to face Manchester City, gives them a reason to be optimistic about their title chances. However, they will be well aware that they cannot afford any slip-ups against teams like Norwich, who Man City thrashed 4-0 at Carrow Road just last weekend.

The form book, on the other hand, does not indicate that such a blip is imminent; Liverpool has gone undefeated in their previous ten matches across all competitions since the turn of the year, winning eight of those matches, including the last seven in a row.

However, those victories have not always been achieved with the same elegance and flair that has been synonymous with Klopp’s Liverpool, most notably their 1-0 victory against Burnley in their most recent Premier League encounter.

The points earned from such scrappy victories are no less precious, and since that spirited performance at Turf Moor, the Reds have also claimed a victory away to Italian champions Inter Milan in the Champions League.

Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah scored late goals to give Liverpool a 2-0 win over Inter Milan at the San Siro on Wednesday. The victory was the Reds’ only two shots on target throughout the game, putting them in command of their last-16 tie and keeping them in contention for all four trophies this season.

To prepare for the first of those, which is an EFL Cup final against Chelsea at the end of the month, Liverpool cannot afford to lose sight of the fact that they are firm favourites for Saturday’s match against Norwich City. Klopp will also not allow his team to underestimate an improving Norwich side despite being firm favourites.

For most of the season, Norwich City was considered certain relegation candidates. However, seven points from the last 12 available have propelled them off the bottom of the league and into 18th place.

Although they are still four points off of safety, and despite having played more games than any of the clubs around them in the standings, recent triumphs against Everton and Watford, which more than doubled their victory total for the season, have at the very least give them a reason to be optimistic.

The 3-0 victory against Watford was notable for several reasons, not the least of which was the fact that it represented half of their meagre six goals away from home this season. However, they remain the division’s lowest scorers with just 14 goals from 24 games, which is not ideal when up against a team that had kept three clean sheets in a row.

It also provides Norwich with the opportunity to win back-to-back Premier League away games for the first time in more than a decade, though doing so at Anfield would require a seismic upset given the Reds’ unbeaten home record in the league, which includes winning the last six in a row by an aggregate score of 17-1 in the process.

Norwich City has only won one of their past 12 league trips to Anfield, and that victory came back in 1994. They have also won just one of their last 25 away Premier League games against clubs currently in the top three of the standings.

However, in all competitions, Norwich has now won three of their past four away games, indicating that the Canaries are making progress on the road. They will be hoping to take full advantage of any European hangover that Liverpool may be experiencing this weekend when they go to Merseyside.

TEAM NEWS:

While Diogo Jota will be a worry after being replaced at half-time against Inter, Luis Diaz will be battling for a starting spot after another impressive cameo off the bench against the Italian champions.

If Klopp continues to rotate his centre-backs, Joel Matip might be recalled in place of Ibrahima Konate, while Jordan Henderson, who started on the bench against Inter, could also be called upon to make his Liverpool debut.

Liverpool possible starting lineup:

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Keita; Salah, Firmino, Diaz

Norwich City possible starting lineup:

Gunn; Aarons, Hanley, Gibson, Williams; Gilmour, Lees-Melou, McLean; Sargent, Pukki, Rashica

PREDICTIONS:

Liverpool has been in superb form, and although Norwich has made significant strides in recent weeks, one only has to look at their most recent match to realise what may happen when they come up against top-tier opponents. The Canaries may have another difficult afternoon.
