Manchester City vs Manchester United: MPL Preview, Predictions and Fantasy team

Defending champions Manchester City will lock horns with arch-rivals Manchester United in Matchday 9 of the Premier League 2022/23 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, October 2. The Manchester derby will start at 6:30 PM Indian Standard Time (IST).

Six-time champions Manchester City have been the only remaining unbeaten team in the Premier League this season so far. Under manager Pep Guardiola, the Cityzens have registered five victories and two draws and are currently placed second in the Premier League 2022/23 standings, four points behind table-toppers Arsenal with a game in hand.

Manchester City will come into the derby brimming with confidence after defeating  Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 in their last Premier League fixture in September. The reigning Premier League champions rode on goals from Jack Grealish, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden to continue their unbeaten run in English top-tier football league.

On the other hand, Manchester United have bounced back in emphatic fashion after losing their first two matches in the ongoing Premier League. Under the tutelage of Dutch football manager Erik ten Hag, Manchester United have beaten rivals Liverpool, Southampton, Leicester City and Arsenal in their last four matches to register four consecutive Premier League victories.

With 12 points from six matches, the Red Devils are currently placed sixth in the Premier League 2022/23 standings.

United will head into the Manchester derby on the back of a 2-0 win against Sheriff in their Group E fixture in the UEFA Europa League earlier in September.

Manchester City Team News:

Manchester City have received a massive boost ahead of the derby with the return of star centre-back Aymeric Laporte from a long-term knee injury. However, City could miss the services of defender John Stones who was substituted with a hamstring injury in England’s draw with Germany.

Pep Guardiola is expected to slot in Ruben Dias and Manuel Akanji at the heart of the defence against Manchester United at the Etihad.

Meanwhile, new summer signing Kalvin Phillips has been ruled out for several weeks due to a shoulder surgery.

All eyes will once again be on Manchester City’s talisman Erling Haaland, who has made a scintillating start to his Premier League career as he will aim to become the first player ever to score a hat-trick in three consecutive Premier League home matches on Sunday.

Manchester United Team News:

Manchester United also have several injury concerns heading into the high-profile encounter against their city rivals.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Martin Dubravka, Donny van de Beek and Brandon Williams are doubtful for the derby.

However, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have returned to training after recovering from their respective injuries and could feature at Etihad.

With Manchester United captain Harry Maguire enduring a torrid time, Erik ten Hag is expected to select new summer signing Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane as his centre-back pairing.

Manchester City possible starting lineup vs Manchester United:

Ederson; Kyle Walker, Manuel Akanji, Ruben Dias, João Cancelo; Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne; Phil Foden, Erling Haaland, Jack Grealish
