MCI vs PSG, UEFA Champions League 2021-22: MPL Preview, Predictions, & Fantasy Team

Match: Manchester City vs Paris Saint-Germain

Date: 25th November, 2021

Venue: Manchester City vs Paris Saint-Germain

Time: 01:30 IST

Two modern-day elites clash at Etihad Stadium

The top two teams of Group H of the 2021/22 season of UEFA Champions League, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain will lock horns at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester in this upcoming clash, with the winner likely to walk away with the top place.

After losing out to fellow Premier League team Chelsea in the final of the last edition, Manchester City started their 2021/22 campaign in grand fashion. They won their first match against German outfit RB Leipzig by a comprehensive margin of 6-3.

However, they were not able to keep up the same momentum in the second game, where Paris Saint-Germain handed them a 2-0 defeat. That being said, Guardiola’s boys have made a great comeback nonetheless. The Cityzens beat Club Brugge 5-1 in their third match, and then in their last outing, they defeated the same team by a 4-1 margin.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men are unbeaten in this season’s Champions League, but are still only second in Group H, as they have drawn two of their four matches. One of those draws came in the very first clash against Club Brugge, where the match ended 1-1.

The Parisiens then went on to beat Manchester City 2-0 and won by a 3-2 margin in their third game against RB Leipzig. However, in the last game against Jesse Marsch’s team, Pochettino’s boys could only manage a 2-2 draw.

Team News

Both Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain will miss a few important players in this clash. Pep Guardiola will be without the services of the playmaker who creates lion’s share of the chances for City, Kevin de Bruyne, as the Belgian tested positive for COVID-19 last season

Spanish attacker Ferran Torres is also nursing a foot injury, while Englishman Jack Grealish is yet to regain one hundred per cent match fitness, after recovering from an injury. Besides these three, Guardiola does not have any other notable absentees.

PSG have four players in the treatment room, but thankfully for them, most of those players would not have started this game anyway. Goalkeeper Alexandre Letellier is nursing a muscular injury, while Italian custodian Gianluigi Donnarumma is suffering from gastroenteritis.

Besides the keeper duo, German midfielder Julian Draxler is out with a muscle injury, while Rafinha is dealing with hip problems. Spanish defender Sergio Ramos is back in contention, but since he has been out of action for a considerable while, he is unlikely to be involved in this match.

Predicted Line-ups

Manchester City: Ederson; Kyle Walker, Aymeric Laporte, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo; Ilkay Gundogan, Rodri, Bernardo Silva; Riyad Mahrez, Gabriel Jesus, Phil Foden

Paris Saint-Germain: Keylor Navas; Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Presnel Kimpembe, Nuno Mendes; Marco Verratti, Idrissa Gana Gueye, Georginio Wijnaldum; Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar Jr.

MCI vs PSG Top Picks

Kylian Mbappe: Forward, Paris Saint-Germain

The French outfit might have some really experienced campaigners in attack, in the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr, but 22-year-old Kylian Mbappe has been the most clinical in front of the goal. He has scored 8 goals in 17 matches, 7 of which came in Ligue 1.

Mbappe’s only Champions League goal this season came against RB Leipzig, but he has got at least one assist in all of his four games. As for his Ligue 1 goals, he has scored one goal against Stade Brestois, Clermont Foot, SCO Angers, Bordeaux and Nantes, while he also netted a brace against Stade Reims.

Riyad Mahrez: Midfielder, Manchester City

Like PSG, Manchester City also have a plethora of attackers, but leading the goal-scoring charts for them is Riyad Mahrez. The Algerian winger has scored 8 goals in 16 matches, 4 of which have come in the Champions League.

He has netted three goals against Club Brugge, while the other goal came against RB Leipzig. Besides that, Mahrez has scored against Norwich City and Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League and has also netted a brace against Wycombe Wanderers in the EFL Cup.

Captain & Vice-Captain Selection

Kylian Mbappe has returned with at least a goal or an assist in every single match he has played in the Champions League this season, while he also has done well in Ligue 1. Hence, he is the most logical captaincy pick. For vice-captaincy, we have gone with Riyad Mahrez, who has been lethal in front of the goal for Manchester City.
