MCI vs SCP, UCL 2021/22: MPL Preview, Predictions & Fantasy Team

Manchester City will host Sporting Lisbon at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 contest, after a 5-0 victory in the first leg.

The Citizens have one foot firmly planted in the quarter-finals of the tournament as they attempt to maintain their ambitions of completing a domestic and continental triple this season.

No one needs to be reminded how many times Pep Guardiola has failed to win the Champions League with Manchester City during his stint as the club’s manager, but his team made an impression in the first leg of their last-16 tie against the defending Portuguese champions.

To virtually kill off the tie over the course of 90 minutes, Bernardo Silva scored twice to go along with goals from Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez, and Phil Foden, and on Sunday, the same merciless streak was on display when arch-rivals Manchester United paid a visit.

As a result, Guardiola’s side thrashed their erstwhile loud neighbours 4-1 to restore their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League table. City has now won seven of their previous eight matches in all competitions heading into the second leg of the Champions League Round-Of-16.

Not since the 2016-17 season have the Citizens missed out on advancing to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. And this week, City has the opportunity to tie the record for the most consecutive home victory in the Champions League knockout rounds, which now stands at six.

The Premier League winners have also triumphed in each of their last 10 home games in Europe’s premier tournament, scoring at least two goals on each occasion. Sporting is, then, realistically just fighting for dignity against City this week.

While there is no shame in coming up short against Manchester City, how Sporting surrendered their lead at home to the English champions was concerning for Ruben Amorim, whose team must stage the biggest Champions League comeback in history if they are to progress.

As a matter of historical record, no club has ever come back to win the Champions League knockouts after being down by five goals after one leg, with Barcelona’s remarkable Remontada against Paris Saint-Germain five years ago (0-4 on the road and 6-1 at home) constituting the closest thing to a comeback.

Sporting, on the other hand, has not let their heads down at home, as they enter the second leg of the tie having won two and drawn one of their previous three matches in the Primeira Liga, including a 2-0 victory against Arouca on Saturday due to a brace from Islam Slimani.

Sporting has never moved beyond the last-16 stage of the Champions League and it is quite doubtful that this will change this week, with the Portuguese club having previously reached this level just once, in 2008-09, when they lost the first leg of their game 5-0 to Bayern Munich. The German giants went on to finish the job with an even bigger margin of victory in the second game, winning 7-1 in the second leg.

City and Sporting have only played once at the Etihad Stadium, with the Citizens advancing to the last-16 of the Europa League despite being knocked out on away goals, and a consolation goal or two will almost certainly be the only thing that the visitors take away from the game on Wednesday.

Ruben Dias will miss the match of the season for Manchester City due to a hamstring injury. Nathan Ake and Cole Palmer are the two players who will be unable to participate because of injury. Kyle Walker will be unable to participate in the game due to a suspension. Zack Steffen is a question mark since he is suffering from a back ailment.

Matheus Nunes has been suspended owing to a build-up of yellow cards on his record. After missing the weekend’s game against Arouca, Daniel Braganca, Joao Palhinha, and Pote are all considered questionable. After scoring a brace on Sunday, Islam Slimani is expected to take the initiative in the attack.

Manchester City Predicted XI (4-3-3): Ederson Moraes, Joao Cancelo, John Stones, Aymeric Laporte, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fernandinho, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling

Sporting CP Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Antonio Adan, Goncalo Inacio, Sebastian Coates, Zouhair Feddal, Pedro Porro, Daniel Braganca, Manuel Ugarte, Ruben Vinagre, Pablo Sarabia, Nuno Santos, Islam Slimani

Pep Guardiola is unlikely to field his best possible side in this match. Manchester City has been playing some excellent football in recent weeks, whilst Sporting CP has battled to keep up with them. Manchester City should be able to cruise to another victory in this match.

The first leg was a one-sided affair and this could be the same. It is at the Etihad and Manchester City will want to dominate once again. Let’s wait and watch.
