MI vs DC: Winning the IPL would have been better, says Shreyas Iyer

Mumbai Indians (MI) riled up a staggering exhibition as they beat the Delhi Capitals (DC) by five-wickets in Dubai and got their hands on their 5th IPL title in a span of eight years. Opting to bat first, the Shreyas Iyer-led DC set a target of 157 in 20 overs which was eventually chased down by defending champions MI, courtesy of the stellar knock at the top-order from skipper Rohit Sharma (68, 51b) and followed by Ishan Kishan (33*, 19b).

From Delhi Capitals, skipper Shreyas Iyer (55*, 50b) played a clutch knock alongside Rishabh Pant (56, 38b) that got their side past the 150-run mark considering they lost the early wickets of Marcus Stoinis (1), Ajinkya Rahane (2), and Shikhar Dhawan (15) and were at 22/3 in 3.3 overs.

The duo of Iyer and Pant added 96 runs for the fourth-wicket stand that paved the way for a competitive total against Rohit Sharma & Co.

In the bowling department, pacer Anrich Nortje (2/25) grabbed the most number of wickets, followed by Marcus Stoinis and Kagiso Rabada scalping a wicket each. Spinner Axar Patel (0/16) was pretty economical in his quota of four overs while Ravichandran Ashwin and Praveen Dubey remained wicketless.

The way Ricky motivates players is amazing: Shreyas Iyer

When asked about working with coach Ricky Ponting and his effect on the youngsters in the team, Iyer replied by calling him one of the biggest motivators in the Delhi Capitals unit.

“Ricky, the amount of freedom he gives us is outstanding. The way he motivates players is simply amazing. His team meetings and motivational speeches were quite incredible,” said Iyer in the post-match presentation.

Delhi Capitals had a roller-coaster ride throughout the tournament. They were extremely dominant in the first half, winning 5 out of 7 Matches, lost the momentum in the second half, but reverted in their last league stage to occupy the second spot in the points table.

DC had suffered a big defeat at the hands of MI in the Qualifiers-1 but bounced back against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Qualifiers-2.

“The IPL always amazes you, it is one of the toughest leagues to play. I am overwhelmed to be a part of it, and I am really proud of my boys, the way they have played to reach the finals, it isn’t easy,” Iyer said when asked about the journey this season.

Delhi Capitals registered their second consecutive playoff appearance, and this was their maiden entry into the IPL finals. Iyer felt that winning the tournament would have been a much better experience.

“Winning the IPL would have been better, but we will see to it that we lift the trophy next year. I would like to thank our fans, and we are thankful for all the support that has been showered on us throughout the season.”
