The Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen several T20 cricket records broken over the years, some of which are embarrassing. While lots of runs have been scored in the tournament, quite a few ducks have also been registered. So who has the most ducks in the IPL? Let’s find out.
Most Ducks in IPL – 13
The most number of ducks scored in the IPL is 13, and five cricketers share this dubious record among themselves.
Harbhajan Singh – 90 innings
The former India cricketer turned commentator has 13 IPL ducks to his name. The spinner, who is currently with the Kolkata Knight Riders after previously playing for Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, has 150 wickets in 163 IPL games. His best season came in 2013 when he picked up 24 wickets. While scoring runs is not his job, Harbhajan has chipped in with over 800 runs in his IPL career. For India, he played 367 games, picking up 711 wickets.
Parthiv Patel – 137 innings
The second player in the IPL who has the most number of ducks is Parthiv Patel. The former Indian cricketer, who has played for CSK, Deccan Chargers, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad has scored 2848 runs including 13 half-centuries. His best season was in 2017 when he scored 395 runs in 16 games. For India, Patel played 65 matches, scoring 1706 runs.
Ajinkya Rahane – 141 innings
Delhi Capitals’ Ajinkya Rahane, who has previously played for Mumbai, Rajasthan Royals and Pune, has scored 13 ducks in 141 innings, while also scoring 3941 runs at a strike rate of 121.33. The India player also has 28 fifties and two centuries in the tournament. In four seasons, Rahane has hit more than 450 runs with his best season coming in 2012 when he scored 560 runs from 16 matches. For India, he has scored 7989 runs across formats.
Ambati Rayudu – 156 innings
The fourth cricketer with most number of ducks in the IPL is Ambati Rayudu. Rayudu has 13 ducks from 156 innings while playing for Chennai and Mumbai. In the 2015 season, Rayudu made 281 runs at a strike rate of 145 and in all, he has 3795 runs including a century and 20 fifties.
Rohit Sharma – 202 innings
The most successful captain in the IPL and also the fourth highest run-scorer, Rohit Sharma is almost among the cricketers who have the most number of ducks in the IPL. Rohit has 13 ducks in 202 innings in which he has also scored 5480 runs including 40 half-centuries and a hundred. For India, he has over 14000 runs in 378 appearances.
The second most number of ducks scored in the IPL are 12, and there are four players who share this record.
Piyush Chawla – 81 innings
Chawla, who has played for KXIP and KKR before joining CSK in 2020, has scored 12 ducks in 81 innings. The bowling all-rounder is the third highest wicket-taker in the IPL with 156 wickets, and has also scored 584 runs down the order. His breakthrough seasons were 2011 and 2012, when he picked up 16 wickets respectively for KKR.
Mandeep Singh – 91 innings
The next batsman to have the second most ducks in the IPL is Mandeep Singh, who currently plays for KXIP. Mandeep has 1659 IPL runs which includes six fifties. His best season came in 2012, when he piled up 432 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 126.31 and ended as Punjab’s highest run-getter.
Manish Pandey – 140 innings
In 140 IPL innings, Manish Pandey has walked back to the pavilion without scoring a run on 12 occasions. While playing for KKR, MI, Pune Warriors, RCB and SRH, the India batsman has scored 3461 runs since the first season of the tournament. Pandey is also the first Indian cricketer to score a century in the IPL. He smashed 114 off just 73 balls against Deccan Chargers in 2009.
Gautam Gambhir – 152 innings
The two-time IPL winning captain, who played for KKR for most part of his IPL career, has 12 ducks in 152 innings as an opening batsman. The former India cricketer turned politician scored 4217 IPL runs which include 36 fifties. He formed the backbone of KKR’s batting unit from 2012 to 2018. For India, the two-time World Cup winning cricketer scored over 10,000 runs in a career spanning across 13 years.
The third most number of ducks scored in the IPL are 11, and there are two players who share this record.
Glenn Maxwell – 85 innings
The swashbuckling batsman, who started his IPL career in 2012, has 11 ducks in 85 innings. Maxwell, who has 1728 IPL runs at a strike rate of 153.32, currently plays for RCB.
Dinesh Karthik – 184 innings
The KKR captain, who has previously been with Delhi, Gujarat, Punjab, Mumbai and Bangalore, has 11 ducks in 184 innings. Dinesh Karthik has 3946 IPL runs including 19 fifties. His best season came in 2013 when he scored 510 runs in 19 matches.
