MUN vs SOU, EPL 2021/22: MPL Preview, Predictions, & Fantasy Team

Manchester United and Southampton will meet in a Premier League lunchtime match on Saturday, 12th Feb at Old Trafford.

The two teams have had diametrically opposed results in midweek. The Red Devils were beaten to a 1-1 draw by Burnley in midweek, while Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side came away with a 3-2 victory against Tottenham Hotspur in a gripping encounter on Saturday.

It was the former Wolfsburg striker who towered over his opposing number physically and symbolically in a well-deserved point for the Clarets, as all eyes were on the coming epic clash between Man United’s Harry Maguire and Burnley’s new star Wout Weghorst at Turf Moor.

Paul Pogba scored the first goal after Raphael Varane seemed to have broken the stalemate only to have the decision overturned by VAR, and Burnley answered immediately in the second quarter via Jay Rodriguez after Weghorst beat Maguire all ends up.

A string of disappointing results for Manchester United continued on Sunday, with Ralf Rangnick failing to spark a quick turnaround after their humiliating FA Cup defeat. As a consequence, the Red Devils plummeted to fifth in the Premier League standings following West Ham United’s victory against Watford.

When it comes to the race for a place in the Champions League, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are both breathing down the Red Devils’ necks. While the draw with Burnley extended Man United’s unbeaten streak in the Premier League to four games, it was more like two points dropped than one gained for United.

Rangnick’s side, on the other hand, can boast a positive record of four wins from their last five Premier League games at Old Trafford heading into this contest, but Southampton is no stranger to taking points off Big Six opponents on their home turf, as evidenced in midweek.

It is common for opponents to suffer deadly repercussions when they give James Ward-Prowse too much time to pick out his intended target, and Tottenham Hotspur was outplayed by the dead-ball expert and his squad in North London on Wednesday evening.

The first half ended with the two teams level at 1-1, even though the Saints should have arguably finished the game off by the half-time whistle. However, goals from Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams sunk the Lilywhites, who had a late equaliser from Steven Bergwijn ruled out for offside.

Because of this, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team now has four victories in their past six matches across all competitions and is in 10th place in the league table.

While such a convincing victory at Tottenham’s home ground may cause some concern among the Saints’ supporters at Old Trafford, the Saints have now conceded at least two goals in each of their last eight away matches in all competitions, with their Premier League tally of 26 goals conceded on the road ranking them joint-worst in the division with Leeds United’s total of 26 goals conceded on the road.

In truth, the Red Devils won’t need a second invitation to expose the same flaws that were exposed at Old Trafford last season – nine was sufficient reward for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men on that memorable occasion – and a 1-1 draw against the Saints at St Mary’s earlier this season extended Southampton’s winless run against the Red Devils to 12 games in all competitions.

(Premier League only)

Manchester United wins: 28

Draws: 10

Southampton wins: 7

Team News:

Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to make his return to the starting lineup for Manchester United after being benched against Burnley.

As a result of testing positive for Covid, Alex Telles and Fred were both absent from the Burnley game. Rangnick has said that Fred might also be a doubt for the game against Southampton, but that he would provide a more detailed report on his selection on Friday.

Nathan Redmond and Nathan Tella were both absent from Southampton’s victory against Tottenham.

Manchester United possible starting lineup:

De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Maguire, Shaw; Pogba, McTominay; Sancho, Fernandes, Elanga; Ronaldo

Southampton possible starting lineup:

Forster; Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Salisu, Perraud; S. Armstrong, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Elyounoussi; Adams, Broja

Keeping a clean sheet and failing to score against Tottenham is a rare occurrence for Southampton, but putting up equal levels of effort at Old Trafford will be a tall order for Hasenhuttl’s side after giving all they had and more against Tottenham.

There should have been some stern words spoken in the Manchester United dressing room during the midweek match, but with the return of Cristiano Ronaldo and some additional rotation in the final third, Rangnick’s side will hope to win a tight contest and reignite their pursuit of a top-four finish.

Score Prediction: MUN 2-2 SOU
