NAP vs MIL, Serie A 2021/22: MPL Preview, Predictions, & Fantasy Team

Serie A heavyweights Napoli and AC Milan meet at Stadio Maradona on Sunday, 6th March evening with the winner leaping forward in the points table.

The Azzurri and their Rossonero rivals opened the season with eight consecutive victories, putting them in a tie with 57 points. However, both sides have undergone multiple twists in momentum since that time, and they will reassemble in Naples with the Scudetto still very much in play.

Napoli has amassed the most points and surrendered the fewest goals in Serie A so far in the second half of the season, but they have drawn their past two league games and been defeated by Barcelona in the Europa League before travelling to Rome last weekend.

Only a few days after their elimination from European play, the Partenopei seemed to have let a possible three points slip through their fingers against Lazio, only for a remarkable turn of events at Stadio Olimpico to change everything.

Napoli’s winless streak had stretched to four games when Pedro volleyed home a spectacular equaliser in the final stages of the game. The result kept Napoli off the top of the Serie A rankings and extended their winless run to a fourth game as well.

Fabian Ruiz’s even sweeter stoppage-time goal, though, gave the visitors the win, prompting wild celebrations and an emotional reaction from manager Luciano Spalletti.

Napoli has now scored a league-high ten goals from beyond the box, partly as a result of long-range specialist Ruiz’s six goals, which puts the Spaniard at the top of the individual scoring standings. With such proficiency, along with the greatest away record and the most strong defence, the Neapolitans are a difficult opponent for any club in the final stretch.

Eljif Elmas scored what turned out to be the winning goal for Napoli as early as the fifth minute of their most recent meeting with Milan, which was a tight affair. Given both their defensive record and previous results against the Rossoneri, they will be a difficult nut to crack again on Sunday.

The setback at home in December has resulted in Milan winning just one of their last 14 league matches with Napoli while suffering eight defeats in the process.

Despite the fact that they had lost their past two matches (both by a single goal), Stefano Pioli’s team came out on top in their most recent meeting in Naples. However, they have not won back-to-back Serie A games in the city since 1981, which makes this week’s match even more important.

Having played out a goalless draw in the second Derby della Madonnina of the season on Tuesday against old rivals Inter in the first leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final, Milan will travel south of Inter on Sunday.

The Rossoneri were held to a 1-1 draw at home by lowly Udinese in the opening game of last weekend, following previous defeats by Sassuolo in Serie A and a draw at rock-bottom Salernitana.

While they maintained a tight three-point lead over Inter, who were held to a stalemate by Genoa, the dramatic events at the Stadio Olimpico saw Napoli leapfrog Inter and take over the top place.

Following that, Inter moved ahead of both teams with a win against Salernitana on Friday, leaving the Scudetto race wide open – yet the spectre of the Old Lady still haunts all three: a resurgent Juventus are once again within striking distance. All of this combines to make Milan’s trip to the Maradona a potentially pivotal 90 minutes for both teams in the league.

PREDICTIONS:

AC Milan has managed to get out of their mid-season rut and has picked up important wins over Lazio and Inter Milan in the last few weeks. The Rossoneri have a strong group at their disposal and will be aiming to win the Scudetto this season. They were on top of the Serie A points table for quite some time and will now want to win this game and get back up there.

Napoli is in a championship fight with the two Milanese giants this season and will be looking to earn a victory in what will be a season-defining match. On paper, both teams seem to be equally suited and might wind up splitting the spoils this weekend.
