ROM vs ATN, Serie A 2021/22: MPL Preview, Predictions, & Fantasy Team

In Serie A, Roma and top-six rivals Atalanta will meet at Stadio Olimpico on Saturday, 5th March.

The teams are separated by only one position and three points in the standings. A victory for the sixth-placed hosts would bring them level on points with the visitors from Bergamo, although neither side has impressed in recent weeks.

Despite having a total of 31 efforts on goal and controlling 65 percent of the ball against 10-man Spezia on Sunday, Roma seemed to be heading for a second consecutive draw as their match at Stadio Alberto Picco reached stoppage time all square.

A diving header from Nicolo Zaniolo nearly brought about a dramatic match-winning goal for the Giallorossi, but the ball struck the crossbar and – following a goalmouth scramble and subsequent VAR delay – the visitors were awarded a penalty for striking the young forward in the face with a high boot.

When Tammy Abraham took the penalty kick, he struck the bottom corner of the net, giving the capital side three much-needed points and lifting them over arch-rivals Lazio.

As he watched from a distance during a two-match touchline suspension, Jose Mourinho’s main emotion would have been relief: not only has Roma posted a six-game unbeaten run in Serie A for the first time under his management, but the victory also keeps them within six points of a Champions League qualifying spot for the first time under his management.

Roma stopped a seven-match losing streak against Atalanta by winning the rematch in December, with goals from Abraham and Zaniolo. Roma had previously lost all seven of their prior meetings with the Lombardy club.

Although Roma has won both of their league meetings with their opponents this season, they have only done so once before in the 2012-2013 campaign, and their fragility against fellow European contenders raises questions about their ability to do so now. In meetings with teams in the top eight, Roma has gained the fewest points – just seven in nine matches, while losing on six occasions.

Following an eight-game losing streak in the previous season’s away matches against Roma in Serie A, Atalanta has gone undefeated in their last seven away meetings against their city rivals, and they are the only side that the Giallorossi has failed to defeat at the Stadio Olimpico since 2015.

The team will want to improve on recent performances, which have included back-to-back victories against Europa League playoff opponents Olympiacos and struggling Sampdoria, which have been won by a combined score of seven goals to zero in the process.

Atalanta’s win over Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia marked the end of a troubling downward spiral in domestic football, during which the team went winless in five Serie A games and was knocked out of the Coppa Italia. As a result of that defeat, as well as a 2-0 loss to the Viola in the league last month, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side finds themselves outside the Champions League places, three points less than Juventus, who however have featured in one more game.

Contrary to popular belief, the Nerazzurri have struggled at home this season, but they have performed well on the road, and their nine wins and one defeat record away from home should help them go to the capital in buoyant spirits before their match.

Gasperini’s players, who have been plagued by injury and other absences for most of the season, have failed to score in three of their previous four Serie A away games and are still a long way from being at their most fluid.

TEAM NEWS:

Roma Team News: Sérgio Oliveira, a winter recruit, will miss this weekend’s game against Atalanta owing to a heel injury sustained in training. His teammates on the sidelines include Leonardo Spinazzola, who is nursing an Achilles ailment that has plagued him for months, and teenage attacker Felix Afena-Gyan, who has been demoted by José Mourinho after an incident off the field. Tammy Abraham, the club’s leading scorer with 12 league goals, should continue to lead the line, while Nicolo Zaniolo, who came off the bench in their 0-1 victory over Spezia the week before, might provide some assistance.

Atalanta Team News: Atalanta will be without three of its forwards this weekend. Bryan Cabezas and Duván Zapata are both rehabilitating from injuries to their cruciate ligaments and hamstrings, respectively. Rafael Tolói, the captain of the other team, is absent due to suspension. In his absence, Berat Djimsiti and Merih Demiral are anticipated to form their centre-back tandem, with Giorgio Cittadini and José Luis Palomino also being considered as possible options. It is likely that Teun Koopmeiners, who scored twice in their 4-0 victory against Sampdoria the previous week, would remain in his number 10 position.

Roma possible starting lineup:

Patricio; Mancini, Smalling, Kumbulla; Karsdorp, Cristante, Veretout, Vina; Pellegrini; Zaniolo, Abraham

Atalanta BC possible starting lineup:

Musso; Djimsiti, Demiral, Palomino; Hateboer, De Roon, Freuler, Maehle; Pasalic, Koopmeiners; Boga

PREDICTIONS:

Despite the fact that both teams are well aware of each other’s strengths and weaknesses, Atalanta has essentially replaced its offensive prowess with a more disciplined defensive approach in recent weeks – notably in high-profile matches against Inter, Lazio, and Juventus, among others.

Each of those games ended in a scoreless or low-scoring tie, and another might be on the cards this week against Roma since their opponents are usually susceptible against the best teams in Serie A.
