IPL 2020: RR vs KKR – I thought I’ll stick to normal line and lengths, says Shivam Mavi

With two back-to-back wins under the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Kolkata Knight Riders would be beaming with confidence as they forge ahead in the mega T20 tournament.

For the Men in Purple and Gold, it was possibly one of the most enthralling moments of this season, more so for the young Indian pacers – Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti – as the duo grabbed two wickets each and played a key role in uprooting the Rajasthan Royals’ top-order and guiding their side to a comprehensive 37-run win in the game at Dubai.

Shivam Mavi was rightly awarded as the Man of the Match for his mind-boggling figures of 4-0-20-2, and dismissing the likes of Sanju Samson (8) and Jos Buttler (21) in the powerplay.

Meanwhile, his partner in crime Kamlesh Nagarkoti bagged 2/13 in the two overs that he bowled and managed to get the wood on both Robin Uthappa (2) and Riyan Parag (1) in the 8th over itself.

It was certainly a crucial stage in the contest as the presence of Samson or Buttler till the later stages could have changed the outcome of the game.

Have played against these big stars before: Shivam Mavi

In the post-match presentation, Mavi shared what lines and lengths he stuck to throughout the game and the bowling conditions at the time he bowled. The Noida-born mentioned how the experience of playing against the big-stars of the game helped him better his performance in the much-coveted contest versus Rajasthan Royals.

“When I started bowling, it was seaming. So I thought I’ll stick to normal lines and lengths. Before the game we thought it would be flatter. So I just stuck to a length. Have played against these big stars before, but I knew it wasn’t coming onto the bat,” said the 21-year-old pacer.

Overall, bowlers from both the teams had dominance on a major duration of the game.

Aussie pacer Pat Cummins, who was the costliest bid in IPL 2020 and picked by KKR for a whopping 15.5 crores INR, struck gold by getting the wicket of Steve Smith (3) at the earliest.

Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy (2/25) had an impressive day at work as he gunned down Rahul Tewatia and Jofra Archer, especially the former’s wicket was critical, as he had a clocked a blistering 31-ball 53 in the outing against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP).

From Rajasthan Royals, Jofra Archer shone with his pace prowess at just the right moment, sending back a well-set Shubman Gill (47) and then later KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik.

With this win under their belt, Kolkata Knight Riders have now jumped to the second spot in the points table, with 4 points and an NRR of +0.117. They will be facing the table-toppers Delhi Capitals (DC) in the second match of the double-header on 3rd October, at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, in Sharjah.
