SA vs ENG, 3rd ODI – Fantasy Preview and Top Picks

Match: South Africa vs England, (SA vs ENG, 3rd ODI)

Date: February 1, 2023 – 4:30 PM IST

Venue: Diamond Oval, Kimberley

South Africa have played like their lives depend on it and have taken an unassailable lead 2-0 in the series. The third and final ODI of the series will take place at Diamond Oval in Kimberly on Wednesday, February 2nd.

Ahead of this series, the Proteas needed to win three out of the remaining five matches in their ICC Super League cycle to secure a direct qualification into the 2023 ODI World Cup. They now have 79 points with three games to go. A victory in the third ODI will all but seal their spot barring any over-rate penalty.

After beating the visitors by 27 runs in the series opener on the back of strong bowling performance, South Africa claimed the second match by five wickets. Bowling first they had rocked back England to 42/2 in 11 overs. But then Harry Brook scored a sublime 80 off 75 balls.

Brook added 73 runs for the fourth wicket with Jos Buttler, who then added 106 runs with Moeen Ali for the fifth wicket. Ali scored 51 off 45 whereas Buttler went on to smash 94 not-out in 81 balls as they posted a strong total of 342/7.

Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock came out with an attacking mindset and smashed 77 runs for the opening wicket in 12 overs. Bavuma scored a fantastic century, scoring 109 off 102. Aiden Markram scored 49 off 43 while David Miller smashed an unbeaten 58 off just 37 to take his side over the line in a tense finish.

Pitch Report and Weather Forecast for SA vs ENG, 3rd ODI, BBL 2022

Diamond Oval in Kimberley has hosted only 18 One-Day Internationals, with the average batting first score reading 223. However, only four matches have been played here in the last decade so there’s not enough sample size for the modern game. Expect a good batting surface in this fixture.

The match could well be affected as the weather in Kimberly doesn’t look promising on Thursday. There’s a possibility of thunderstorms in the afternoon with around 45% chance of precipitation.

South Africa – Expected XI and Team News

South Africa made three changes to their bowling attack in the previous game, bringing in Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi and Keshav Maharaj for Sisanda Magala, Kagiso Rabada and Tabraiz Shamsi. Rabada and Magala could replace Parnell and Ngidi for the third ODI.

Probable XI – Quinton de Kock (wk), Temba Bavuma (c), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Sisanda Magala, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje

England – Expected XI and Team News

England expectedly brought in Chris Woakes and Reece Topley in the second ODI. Jofra Archer, who was rested on Sunday, should be back for this game, most likely in place of Topley. Ben Duckett hasn’t bagged his chances and could lose his spot to Phil Salt if the latter is fit.

Probable XI – Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (c/wk), Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Olly Stone

Best Captaincy Picks for the SA vs ENG match

Rassie van der Dussen: Batter, South Africa

Rassie van der Dussen scored a terrific 111 in the opening game and looked good in the second with 38. The right hand batter has 1674 runs in ODI cricket at an average of 70 and strike rate of 90. Rassie has registered four hundreds and 11 fifties, and remains a safe captaincy option.

Jos Buttler: Wicketkeeper Batter, England

One of the best white-ball batters in the world, Jos Buttler scored an unbeaten 94 off 81 in the second game. He has smashed 4405 runs in the ODI format at an average of 41 while striking at an excellent 119. Buttler is top C/VC option in this game.

Harry Brook: Batter, England

Playing only his second ODI, Harry Brook batted like he belongs at this level and smashed 80 off 75 on Sunday. He’s a highly rated cricketer with some terrific form to back him up. Brook can be a very good differential C/VC option.

Top Differential Picks

Temba Bavuma: Batter, South Africa

The South African captain struck a magnificent century in the second ODI. He has 875 runs in the format at an average of 46 with three hundreds. Bavuma pulled up a hamstring on Sunday but if he plays, can be a good differential having been picked by 39% of the MPL teams.

Marco Jansen: All-rounder, South Africa

Marco Jansen is picked by only around 13% of the MPL teams and offers good value. The all-rounder picked one wicket and scored 32 off 29 in the second game.
