SS vs ST, BBL 2021-22: Fantasy Preview, Predictions and MPL Top Picks

Match: Sydney Sixers vs Sydney Thunder, Big Bash League 2021 (SS vs ST)

Date: January 15, Saturday, 1:10 PM IST

Venue: Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney, Australia

Sydney Sixers will take on the Sydney Thunder in the 50th match of Big Bash League 2021 on January 15 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Sixers, led by Moises Henriques, are placed third in the points table after winning seven of their 11 games. They come into this contest on the back of a 45-run win over Melbourne Renegades. James Vince has returned home for international duty, but the franchise will not be too unhappy about it because the English opener was not able to replicate his performances from last season.

The Thunder, on the other hand, are confirmed to play the playoffs. They are placed second in the points table after winning eight of their 12 games. However, they come into this game on the back of a nine-run loss to the Hobart Hurricanes on Thursday, which also brought an end to their six-match winning streak. A win against the local rivals over the weekend will cement Thunders’ place in the top two. For the Thunder, Sam Billings has flown to Australia to play the fifth Ashes Test, but Alex Hales has found form ahead of the knockout games.

Ahead of match number 50, let’s look at the head to head total of both the teams, the pitch report, weather update, top picks for your MPL fantasy team and more.

Weather update and pitch report for SS vs ST

The pitch at the Sydney Cricket Ground is generally a balanced one. But it has behaved unpredictably in this season of the BBL. Of the four matches played at the SCG in BBL 11, the first two were high scoring while the next two were low scoring. In this season’s opening game, the Sixers hit 213/4 in the first innings, while in the most recent game played here, they had to chase down only 105 to win. Overall, 47 BBL matches have been played at the SCG, of which 25 have been won by the team chasing the target.

As for the weather update, the temperature is likely to range from 18 to 20 degree Celsius. We could see the match delayed or shortened due to a high possibility of rain.

Sydney Sixers team news and predicted XI

SS vs ST: Five players to watch out for

Here we list five players you must pick in your MPL fantasy XI for Sydney Sixers vs Sydney Thunder.

Josh Philippe – Batter, Sydney Sixers

In 10 innings, Josh Philippe has scored 327 runs at an average of 36.33 and a strike rate of 145.33. The wicketkeeper has hit 27 fours and 13 sixes and will be looking for a few more boundaries in the next few games. It is important to note that the 24-year-old has been dismissed on a duck thrice in his last four BBL outings, but his performances from the first half of the edition still make him a good pick for your MPL team. The right-hander has played 74 T20s, from which he has an average and strike rate of 29.34 and 137.47.

Moises Henriques – All-rounder, Sydney Sixers

The Sydney Sixers captain was his team’s top scorer in the previous game against the Renegades, where he scored 49 off 35 which was laced with four boundaries and a maximum. Earlier in this edition of the BBL, he scored two back to back fifties against the Stars and Hurricanes respectively. In all, the all-rounder has played 238 T20s, from which he has a batting average and strike rate of 26.75 and 128.57. With the ball, the medium pacer has 115 wickets.

Jason Sangha – Batter, Sydney Thunder

The 22-year-old right-hander batter is relatively new to competitive cricket with only 22 T20s under his belt. But Sangha’s fine performances in BBL 11 earned him the Thunder’s captaincy midway through the season. Sangha has consistently contributed to the team’s success this season, and his contributions include three unbeaten knocks of 56, 91 and 35. In all, the right-hander has a healthy average of over 35 in his T20 career.

Ben Dwarshuis – Bowler, Sydney Sixers

Ben Dwarshuis was named the Player of the Match in Sixers’ most recent game against the Renegades. The left-arm pacer picked up five wickets for 28 runs in his four overs, which helped his side win the game by 45 runs. Overall, Dwarshuis has picked up 12 wickets this season. Another good pick would be Hayden Kerr, who has 17 wickets from 11 games at an average of 11.41.

Alex Hales – Batter, Sydney Thunder

Alex Hales underperformed in the first half of the tournament but bounced back to form at a time when it mattered the most. In his last three outings, Hales has scored 63, 80* and 38, which will give him the confidence for another big knock in the next game. In all, the right-hander has a strike rate of over 145 in his 324-match T20 career.
