There is no team in the world that wouldn’t want Glenn Maxwell: Michael Vaughan

Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan strongly believes that Glenn Maxwell would be among the highest bids in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions for the upcoming edition. Maxwell was among the highest run-getters in the concluded three-match ODI series against India wherein he registered scores of – 45 (19), 63*(19), and 59(38). The Victoria cricketer averaged 83.50 and struck at a rate of over 190, thereby playing a key role in his team’s triumphs in the first and second ODI.

Prior to the ongoing home series, the right-hander had a dry run with the bat in IPL 2020 that took place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He was among the highest bids in the IPL 2020 auctions and was grabbed by the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) for a massive sum of 10.75 crore INR. However, he could muster only 108 runs in 13 innings at an average of 15.43 and a strike rate of 101.89.

Maxwell has enjoyed success in the T20Is wherein he holds two centuries and 22 half-centuries under his belt, enjoys an average and strike rate of 33.52 and 158.37 respectively, but he hasn’t been able to emulate similar performances in the last few editions of the cash-rich T20 tournament.

Vaughan, based on Maxwell’s current form in the limited-overs, reckons that his all-round contribution as a batsman, bowler and gun fielder makes the Australian cricketer one of the most sought out players in the teams across the world.

Most teams will look for Maxwell in the next IPL auction: Michael Vaughan

“I don’t think there is any white-ball team in the world that wouldn’t want Maxwell. I am pretty sure next time in the IPL auction, most of the teams will look for Maxwell. Look what Australia have done, they have found the right place for him – at No. 7, and I don’t think they will move him too much unless obviously, they get off to the fliers,” Vaughan was quoted saying to Cricbuzz.

Maxwell’s acrobatic fielding could easily save at least 5-10 runs for his team which coupled with his hard-hitting ability down the order makes him one of the hottest picks in any limited-overs unit.

“I think his fielding is pretty much guaranteed that he is going to probably save 5-10 runs in the field. So, he is already in my eyes when he goes out to bat, on 10. I mention that most of the batsmen start on nought, Maxwell starts on 10 because he is that good in the field,” said the 43-year-old Eccles-born.

He added,” As I said there is no team in the world that wouldn’t want Glenn Maxwell with what he brings all around.”

Maxwell is currently a part of the Australian squad that would be gearing up for the upcoming 3-match T20Is against India. The series is scheduled to commence from December 4 with the first T20I at the Manuka Oval in Canberra, followed by the remaining matches at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney.
