U19 WC 2021-22: India vs South Africa headline Matchday 2

The second matchday of the 2021-22 ICC U19 World Cup will witness four matches being played simultaneously. The January 15 fixtures will be headlined by a marquee contest between India U19s and South Africa U19s while Ireland and Uganda will go head to head in the second Group B game. From Group A, we will have Canada U19s taking on UAE U19s while the fourth fixture will be between Group C teams – Papua New Guinea and Zimbabwe.

India U19s vs South Africa U19s

The record four-time U19 WC champions and the runner-ups of the previous edition, India will kick off their campaign on January 15. India and South Africa will face off at the Providence stadium in Guyana from 7:30 PM IST and you can watch it live on Star Sports Network and Disney+ Hotstar.

The Indian team led by Yash Dhull is regarded as one of the strongest teams in the tournament. They left no stone unturned in their preparation for the event, with the Challenger Trophy, Tri-series with Bangladesh and Asia Cup. In the Asia Cup, India smashed Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the semi-final and final, respectively, to claim the title. India looked too strong for their opponents in both the warm-up games against the West Indies and Australia.

South Africa, who finished eighth in the last edition, will be led by George van Heerden in this WC. They competed in a four-match One-Day series against West Indies, which they managed to draw by 2-2. SA U19s played one warm-up game on Wednesday against the Windies, winning by seven wickets courtesy of some strong performances from a few players.

Captain and Vice-captain

Harnoor Singh is a promising in-form left handed batter who opens for India. He was the leading run-scorer in the three tournaments prior to the WC. Harnoor Singh scored 382 runs across nine innings at an average of 42, heading into the WC. He looked fantastic in the warm-up matches as well, scoring unbeaten 100 against Australia. With such form on his side, it’s a no-brainer to make him the captain.

Shaik Rasheed bats at no. 3 for India U19s and has been in scintillating form. He was superb for India in recent tournaments, amassing 301 runs across eight innings at an average of 60, prior to the WC. Rasheed was terrific in the warm-up game against Australia, scoring 72* off 74. Rasheed is in form and as a top order batter, can be a solid VC option.

Other Key Players

Rajvardhan Hangargekar is one of the most promising young bowlers in India. The right arm medium pacer has done well in the age group tournaments. In his last nine fifty-over matches, he has picked 14 wickets with best figures of 4 for 45. Hangargekar was impressive in the warm-up match against Australia, where he claimed 3 for 53.

Dewald Brevis is a leg-break bowler from South Africa who also adds a great value with the bat. He was terrific against the Windies in a series in the lead up to this WC, picking 10 scalps from just three matches at an incredible strike rate of 9. Brevis has two fifties in his last five One-Day matches, including 50 in the warm-up game.

Canada U19s vs UAE U19s

Canada and the United Arab Emirates will go head to head in the first game of Group A at Basseterre in St Kitts on Saturday. Team Canada will be led by Mihir Patel while the UAE team will play under Alishan Sharafu’s leadership.

In the 2019-20 edition, Canada had defeated the UAE in the 13th place playoff while the UAE’s only win in the tournament was against Canada in the group stage.

Captain and Vice-captain

Alishan Sharafu opens the batting for the UAE and right arm medium pace. He has scored 145 runs in six youth ODIs and has only been dismissed twice. He has two fifties to his name and has also picked one wicket. Sharafu can be a very good captaincy option.

Mihir Patel will be leading the Canadian U19s team this tournament and is the only player who has played in the previous edition. He has 137 runs to his name from five youth ODIs at an average of 28, including the best of 90. Patel has the experience and can be a solid VC option.

Ireland U19s vs Uganda U19s

Ireland will take on Uganda in a Group B fixture at Everest Cricket Club Ground in Georgetown Guyana on Saturday. Tim Tector will be leading the Irish U19 side in this WC while Uganda U19s will be led by Pascal Murungi.

Ireland played a four-match series against Zimbabwe in the lead up to the WC, where they lost three matches and claimed a 120-run victory in the last game. Ireland had more cricket under their belt in the warm-up fixtures, losing against Sri Lanka and then defeating Scotland.

Uganda U19s made it to this tournament after topping the table in Africa region qualifiers, winning three out of four matches. They played one warm-up match against Sri Lanka, where they were rolled out for 46 after conceding 277/8.

Captain and Vice-captain

Tim Tector, the Irish skipper, adds a great stability in the Ireland middle order. He was outstanding in the series against Zimbabwe, scoring 204 runs at an average of 51, with two fifties including the highest of 94. Tector is in form and can be a very good option for captaincy.

Nathan McGuire is a right arm off-break bowler who has done extremely well for Ireland in age group cricket. He has picked 10 wickets in four youth ODIs at an excellent strike rate of 21.6, including best of 4/10. McGuire was terrific in both the warm-up matches, picking 2/40 and 5/33. With that form behind him, he can be a solid VC option.

PNG, on the other hand, suffered a 281-run loss at the hands of England in their warm-up fixture.
