U19 WC 22 Day 9: WI, SL, Ire and SA to feature

The first 18 games of the ICC U19 World Cup 2022 are done and dusted, and we now are into day nine of the tournament which will see two games played simultaneously. West Indies U19 will take on Sri Lanka U19 at the Conaree Sports Club in Basseterre at 7.30 PM IST, while South Africa U19 and Ireland U19 will face off at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, at the same time. Both the matches will be streamed live on the Star Sports Network. Users with a subscription can also watch the games on the Disney + Hotstar app.

West Indies U19 vs Sri Lanka U19

Match 19 of the U19 World Cup 2021-22 will be played between West Indies U19 and Sri Lanka U19 at the Conaree Sports Club in Basseterre. Both the teams are placed in Group D alongside Australia U19 and Scotland U19. Sitting right at the top of the group are Sri Lanka U19, who have won both of their opening games and subsequently have four points. West Indies, meanwhile, have two points after losing one of their two games, and are thus placed third in the group.

Sri Lanka U19’s first assignment of the tournament was against Scotland U19, whom they beat by 40 runs. A half-century from Sakuna Nidarshana Liyanage helped them post 218 in the first innings. Later in the game, Dunith Wellalage picked up five wickets to help his side win the game comprehensively. Only one batsman from Scotland U19 managed a score in excess of 20s.

The islanders continued their fine form in their next game against Australia U19, which they won by four wickets. Opening batsman Campbell Kellaway scored a half-century to help Australia U19 post a total of 175, which Sri Lanka U19 gunned down in only 37 overs. Once again it was Wellalage who stood out with a half-century, while the tail-enders also chipped in with crucial runs.

West Indies U19, on the other hand, lost their first game to Australia U19, before being outdone by Scotland U19 in their next game. Against the young Aussies, they failed to defend a below average total of 169 runs. But their bowlers put up a terrific performance against the Scots in the next game, dismantling them for only 95 in 35.1 overs. West Indies U19 didn’t require much effort to win the game, and chased 96 in 19.4 overs.

As for the pitch report for the West Indies U19 vs Sri Lanka U19 game, it is better to pick more bowlers than batsmen in your fantasy XI because run-scoring is not easy at the Conaree Sports Club.

Captain and Vice-captain

Dunith Wellalage is the leading wicket-taker in the tournament so far, with 10 wickets in just two matches. The Sri Lanka captain has been equally impressive with the bat too, having scored 52 runs in his most recent outing. Consider him as the best choice for your MPL team’s captaincy for this game. His price on the app is 9.5 credits.

Shiva Sankar, a right arm medium pacer, has picked up 4 wickets in the 2 matches that he has played, and was especially impressive in the recent game against Scotland U19, in which he picked up three wickets for just 17 runs. He can be a good option for your MPL team’s vice-captaincy and is priced at a reasonable 8 credits.

Ireland U19 vs South Africa U19

Match 20 of the U19 World Cup 2021-22 will be played between South Africa U19 and Ireland U19 at the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium. Both the teams are placed in Group B alongside India U19 and Uganda U19. Both South Africa U19 and Ireland U19 have two points each, but with a better net run-rate, the former are placed second in the table and the latter third.

South Africa U19 played their tournament opener against India U19, losing by a big margin of 45 runs. They were bundled out for 187 in their chase of 232 after none of their batsmen except Dewald Brevis (65) could get going. However, they picked themselves up to win the second game against Uganda U19 by a whopping 121 runs. Batting first, they put up 231 runs on the board, before dismantling the opposition for just 110 runs. Once again, Brevis was the best performer with a century with a bat and two wickets with the ball.

Ireland U19, on other hand, won their tournament opener against Uganda U19 after successfully defending 236. Wicketkeeper Joshua Cox scored a century, while Matthew Humphreys bagged four wickets. However, they lost their next game to India U19 by 174 runs, which largely dipped their net run rate. The target of 308 set by India U19 was always going to be difficult for the Irish colts, but they were expected to put up a much better fight.

The game between South Africa U19 and Ireland U19 will be played at the Brian Lara Stadium, where the pitch is a balanced one.  The average 1st innings score at this venue in the last 15 matches is 229 runs, while the team batting first has won 67% of their matches here.

Captain and Vice-captain

Without a doubt, Dewald Brevis should be your captaincy choice for the South Africa U19 vs Ireland U19 game. The 18-year-old has been on fire in the tournament so far – he scored a fifty in the warm-up against West Indies U19, 65 runs against India U19 and 104 runs against Uganda U19. The spin bowler also has four wickets in the two league stage games and has also been fairly economical. South Africa U19 will be hoping for another all-round performance from Dewald, who has played some fine knocks at the U19 level in the recent past. Dewald’s price on the MPL app for this game is 9.5 credits.

You can consider Joshua Cox as a dependable player for your MPL team’s vice-captaincy. Although the wicketkeeper batsman failed to deliver against India U19, perishing for only 28 runs, he scored an unbeaten 111 against Uganda U19 in the opening game. In the two warm-up games Cox played before the tournament, he scored unbeaten knocks of 44 and 28 each. To stay afloat in the tournament, Ireland’s next game is a must-win for them, and they will be banking on Cox for some runs. The right-hander’s price on the MPL app for this game is 9 credits.
