U19 WC 2021-22: Afghanistan, England and South Africa in action on Matchday 5

The matchday no. 5 of the Under-19 World Cup 2021-22 will witness a triple header with fixtures from Group A, B and C on January 18. From Group A, England and Canada will take on each other while South Africa and Uganda will clash from Group B. Afghanistan will play their first game of the U19 WC 2021-22, when they meet Papua New Guinea in Group C.

All three matches will begin from 6:30 PM IST on Tuesday and the Indian viewers can watch selective matches on Star Sports Network and Disney+ Hotstar.

Canada U19s vs England U19s

England and Canada will face off in the match no. 11 of the U19 WC 2021-22 in a Group A fixture at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts. Canada are coming off a loss while England had a comprehensive victory in the first game.

Canada U19s lost to the United Arab Emirates U19s by 49 runs on Saturday. Gurnek Johal Singh was the pick of the bowlers for them with 2 for 38 in eight overs but lack of control from others meant they conceded 284/7 in 50 overs. Chasing the target, Canada lost wickets at regular intervals. Anoop Chima scored 46 at the top while Kairav Sharma added 43 down the order. Captain Mihir Patel, who was the constant at the crease with a 96, was the last man to fall.

England, on the other hand, hammered the defending champions Bangladesh by seven wickets at Basseterre on Sunday. Bowling first, they skittled Bangladesh U19s for just 97 with Joshua Boyden picking four wickets. Jacob Bethell anchored the innings with his 44 as England chased down the target in 25.1 overs. They occupy the top spot in Group A with two points and a net run-rate of +1.954 and would be looking to cement it with another victory.

Captain and Vice-captain

Joshua Boyden is a promising left arm pacer from England and has done well in age group cricket. He has played seven youth ODIs, picking 12 scalps at an economy of 3.97. Boyden was outstanding in England’s opening group game against Bangladesh, where he ran through the batting unit with 4 for 16 from nine overs. Boyden could be a good option for captaincy.

Mihir Patel, the skipper of Canada U19s, has played six youth ODIs and several other fifty-over matches. He has scored 233 runs in six youth ODIs at an average of 39, with a couple of 90s to his credit. He was excellent in the first group match against the UAE U19s, scoring 96 off 105 balls. Mihir Patel bats at no. 4 and is a solid VC option.

South Africa U19s vs Uganda U19s

The match no. 12 of the U19 WC 2021-22 will see South Africa U19s take on Uganda U19s in a Group B fixture at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad on Tuesday. Both the teams are coming into this game on the back of a loss in their opening match and would be desperate to get off the mark.

South Africa suffered a 45-run loss at the hands of India on Saturday. SA bowlers did well to bowl out India U19s to 232, with Matthew Boast picking three wickets. Chasing the target, they were in the contest as long as Dewald Brevis was at the crease. He scored 65 while captain George van Heerden added 36 but SA were eventually bowled out for 187. Their net run-rate reads -0.900 and they will need a big win here.

Uganda were defeated by 39 runs in their first game of the tournament against Ireland. Bowling first, they managed to restrict Ireland to 236/9 with four bowlers taking two wickets each. In response, however, none of the batter could make a mark apart from captain Pascal Murungi, who scored 63. Juma Miyaji smashed 38 off 21 down the order but it was too late as they were bundled out for 197. Uganda U19s would be eager to pull off an upset in this game.

Captain and Vice-captain

Dewald Brevis, known as ‘Baby ABD’ in South African circuit, has an immense potential as a batter and bowls legspin as well. The right hand batter has scored three fifties in his last six innings. Brevis scored a fifty in the warm-up game and followed it up with 65 against India U19s. He has picked 12 scalps in the last four innings, including 2/43 in the last game. Dewald Brevis is the best bet for captaincy.

Matthew Boast is a right arm fast bowler from South Africa who is very potent with the new ball. He has picked 8 wickets in the last three innings. He picked 3 for 9 in the warm-up game against West Indies and followed it up with 3 for 40 in the first group match against India. Boast could well be too much to handle for the inexperienced Uganda U19s and is a good VC pick.

Afghanistan U19s vs Papua New Guinea U19s

Afghanistan will kick off their U19 WC campaign facing Papua New Guinea in the match no. 13 in a Group C fixture on Tuesday. PNG are coming into this game on the back of a heavy loss and would be desperate to put up a better show.

Afghanistan U19s finished seventh in the previous edition and will be looking to continue their rise in cricket. They played a five-match series against Bangladesh in the lead up, where they lost three games and won two. In the recent youth Asia Cup, they finished third in Group A after winning only one game out of three. They will be led by Suliman Safi in this tournament.

Papua New Guinea were hammered in the first game by 228 runs at the hands of Zimbabwe. No one apart from John Kariko could keep a lid on the run-scoring as they conceded 321/9 in 50 overs. In response, none of the batters could cross the 15-run mark as they were skittled for just 93.

Captain and Vice-captain

Noor Ahmad is another one of the quality spinners Afghanistan has produced over the years. The left arm wrist spinner has snared 29 wickets in just 14 youth ODIs at an exceptional average of 15.89. Noor Ahmad has two four-wicket hauls to his name, including 4/43 against India U19s in the youth Asia Cup. He has taken eight scalps in his last three innings and is a great captaincy option.

Suliman Safi has a lot of experience and has done very well even in First Class cricket in a short span. The left hand batter has played five youth ODIs, scoring 146 runs at an average of 29. Suliman scored 73 off 86 in his last innings in the youth Asia Cup against India. Safi bats at no. 4 and can be a solid VC option.
