Benfica host Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League 2021-22 quarter-finals – Watch live in India

UEFA Champions League 2021-22 quarter-finals

The UEFA Champions League 2021-22 quarter-finals will see Liverpool FC travelling to Portugal to visit Benfica at the Estadio da Luz for the first leg on April 6, 2022. The other match will see Liverpool’s Premier League opponents Manchester City host defending Spanish champions Atletico Madrid at the City of Manchester Stadium on the very same day.

Benfica youngster Darwin Nunez has become the talk of the town after inspiring his team to a wonderful victory in the previous round of the Champions League against Ajax. After the two sides had played out an even 2-2 draw in the first leg, Nunez headed home the only goal of the second leg to send his side into the quarter-finals of this season’s Champions League.

The Urugayan found the back of the net once again in the weekend’s Primeira Liga battle with Sporting Braga. However, his penalty goal proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Benfica ended up suffering a 3-2 loss. Seeing their unbeaten run of nine games across all competitions come to an end just before a clash against Liverpool is hardly ideal preparation.

Benfica have never made it past the quarter-finals of the Champions League in its current format which began in 1992. Their highest-ever finish was in the quarter-finals of the 2015-16 season when they were knocked out by Bayern Munich.

Having taken a commanding 0-2 lead at the San Siro in the first leg of the Round of 16, Liverpool looked to be in trouble when Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez fired home a long-range effort to make things interesting in the second leg. While it seemed like the Scudetto holders would be able to break the Reds’ resilience at Anfield, any hopes of a comeback ended a couple of minutes later when Alexis Sanchez was red-carded.

Liverpool were also far from their best in Sunday’s encounter with Watford in the Premier League. However, a Diogo Jota header and a Fabinho penalty on either side of the half-time break was enough to secure a 2-0 win as they keep within a point of Manchester City at the top of the table.

Liverpool have lost only one of their last 17 matches across all competitions – the defeat to Inter in the second leg. Klopp’s side have gone through February and March without conceding a goal at home and will be looking for another dominant result here.

Meanwhile, Manchester City will take on Atletico Madrid at home and it will pit two coaches – Pep Guardiola and Diego Simeone – who have attained success with contrasting methods against each other. Both City and Atletico are arriving into the game after winning their respective league matches and both sides are stacked with quality on paper.
