Virat Kohli will have 400-500 runs by the end of IPL 2020: Sunil Gavaskar

While Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has been impressive runs so far, winning two games in their initial three matches, their skipper Virat Kohli has had a tough run with the bat.

In three matches, the Delhi-born cricketer has accumulated merely 18 runs averaging 6.00.

Backing him for the season ahead, former Indian cricketer and veteran of 125 Tests, Sunil Gavaskar, feels that it’s too early to write him off just because of three quiet matches. He strongly believes that Virat will have a great run with the bat as the tournament progresses.

Virat Kohli is a class act: Sunil Gavaskar

The 71-year-old highlighted Virat’s performances in IPL 2016 and though it’s difficult to score 900 runs at this stage in IPL 2020, the RCB skipper can still end up aggregating around 500 runs by the end of the tournament.

“He’s a class act everybody knows that. So what if he’s had three quiet matches, he’s the kind of batsman who will make up for it towards the end,” said Gavaskar on air post the nerve-wracking encounter between RCB and MI in Dubai on Monday.

“He may have started slowly but by the time the tournament ends, he will have 400-500 runs which is what he gets every year. There was that one year when he got almost 1000 runs and hundreds as well.

“He may not get 900 runs because the first three matches have been quiet but 500 runs totally, they are all written there,” said Gavaskar.

Though RCB won their third match of the season against Mumbai Indians in Dubai, skipper Virat Kohli could score just three runs off eleven deliveries. He was caught by Rohit Sharma in leggie Rahul Chahur’s over while hitting a shot to extra cover.

In spite of that, Kohli came out to bat in the super-over alongside AB de Villiers. He hit the winning runs by smashing a four to square leg boundary off Jasprit Bumrah’s delivery.

Earlier in the day, RCB were put to bat first; a decision that paid off for the Men in Red, as they put 201 runs on board, with Aaron Finch (52), Devdutt Padikkal (54), Ab de Villiers (55) and Shivam Dube (27) cracking up crucial numbers.

Though the game went for a super-over, the Bengaluru-based franchise managed to win the contest in the end.

Virat Kohli has the most number of runs under his belt in the Indian Premier League. In 173 innings, the Run-Machine has aggregated 5435 runs, averaging 37.22, striking at 131.18, with 5 centuries and 36 half-centuries. In all likelihood, the skipper will find his scintillating form as the forthcoming matches.

Currently placed at the 3rd spot with 2 wins in 3 matches, RCB will play their next match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on October 3 in Dubai
