WAT vs ARS, EPL 2021/22: MPL Preview, Predictions, & Fantasy Team

Watford prepares to play Arsenal at Vicarage Road in the Premier League on Sunday, with the Hornets looking to steal points away from a top-six club for the second week in succession.

The Hornets held Manchester United to a scoreless draw in their last outing, while Mikel Arteta’s side came from behind to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 in their most recent outing.

As much as Man United’s complete lack of ruthlessness was to fault for their failure to beat Watford last weekend, nothing can take away from the Hornets’ defensive solidity, which they have exhibited far more under Roy Hodgson’s guidance.

The veteran Hodgson has certainly been putting the hours in on the training field to shore up his side’s leaky rearguard, excluding the 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Crystal Palace, but a lack of offensive threat continues to be a problem for the relegation dogfighting.

Indeed, Watford has scored only two goals in six games since Hodgson took over as manager from Claudio Ranieri, and the Hornets come into Sunday’s test in 19th position in the Premier League, three points behind 17th-placed Everton despite having played two more games.

Watford’s Premier League fate is now out of their own hands, and their record of just one victory in their previous 14 matches in the top tier does nothing to assist their case. The less said about their recent home play, the better, as that has been poor.

The Hornets’ seven points from a possible 39 on home turf this season remains the poorest home record of any club in the Premier League this season, and they are now on a run of seven consecutive losses at home ahead of a meeting with one of the top-four favourites on Saturday.

Arteta’s men went into the game against Wolves on Thursday looking to secure their second victory in a month. However, the writing was on the wall when Hwang Hee-chan took advantage of a mistake by Gabriel Magalhaes early in the first half to put Arsenal 1-0 down.

Wolves did not lose a Premier League game after taking the lead since November 2018. Mikel Arteta’s inspired second-half changes caused chaos at the Emirates, as Nicolas Pepe equalised before playing Alexandre Lacazette through, and the Frenchman’s scuffed effort ended up in the back of the net off of Jose Sa with what was effectively the final kick of the game.

Two weeks after being criticised for the way in which they celebrated their victory at Molineux, Arsenal showed no signs of letting up in front of their own supporters, with Arteta may be more aware than anyone else of exactly how crucial that win might prove in the battle for a top-four finish.

Arsenal finished the month of February with nine points from a possible nine, a performance that earned Arteta a nomination for Manager of the Month. Arsenal remains sixth in the league, but have cut the distance on Manchester United to only two points with three games left more than them

Furthermore, with Manchester United facing a difficult trip to Manchester City and fifth-placed West Ham United going to face Liverpool on Sunday, Arsenal might very well move into the Champions League places if things go their way this weekend.

As well as winning their past three away games in the Premier League, Arteta’s side also defeated the Hornets 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium in November, giving them their fifth victory in their last six meetings with them.

Team News:

Peter Etebo is making good progress in his rehabilitation from a knee injury for Watford, and he just featured in an Under-23 game. However, the Arsenal game may come a little too soon for the midfielder at this point. Nicolas Nkoulou is another player who is hoping to return soon, although he may not be able to do so due to a hamstring injury.

After a solid 0-0 draw away at Old Trafford, Hodgson may be tempted to stick with the same lineup for the game against Arsenal.

After sitting out the victory against Wolves, Emile Smith Rowe has returned to training this week, while Takehiro Tomiyasu has been out with a new calf injury.

Arsenal might benefit from the return of Kieran Tierney, who has been out with a thigh ailment.

Watford possible starting lineup:

Foster; Ngakia, Cathcart, Samir, Kamara; Cleverley, Sissoko, Louza; Pedro, Dennis, King

Arsenal possible starting lineup:

Ramsdale; Cedric, White, Gabriel, Tierney; Xhaka, Partey; Saka, Odegaard, Smith Rowe; Lacazette

Arsenal was given an additional week of rest as a result of Chelsea’s involvement in the League Cup final, and Mikel Arteta’s players should be in good shape for this match. As they strive for a top-four finish in the league, their whole emphasis is on the competition.

It has been revived expectations that Watford may escape the relegation zone as a result of their better recent performances, however, their dismal home record will have to improve for that to happen. In front of their own supporters, the Hornets are now on a seven-game losing streak, which does not bode well for their next match against a resurgent Arsenal team.

The host team also has a weak defence, but Arsenal’s goal-shy assault may be unable to take advantage of the situation. It is our prediction that the visitors will earn a narrow win while also keeping a clean sheet.
