Neymar (FC Barcelona to Paris Saint Germain, €222m)

Paris Saint Germain spent almost their entire transfer purse to bring Neymar to the club in 2017 as they spent a world record fee of 222 million Euros. The transfer created a big hype in the football circuit as the French club triggered the release clause of the 30 year old pretty actively.

Neymar has been amongst goals since his arrival as he lifted the Ligue 1 title on four occasions including a domestic treble in his first campaign at the Parc des Princes. But it is the Champions League which has eluded him at the club. He came close as PSG made it to the final in 2020 but lost to Bayern Munich in the penultimate match.

Till now this record transfer fee hasn’t been beaten by any club and it could remain intact for a few seasons it seems.

Kylian Mbappe (Monaco to Paris Saint Germain, €180M)

Kylian Mbappe became the second most expensive player when PSG decided to bring another youngster from fellow French club Monaco in 2018. The French giants paid an initial €145m Euros to Monaco and they are designated to receive another €35 million as add-ons. It is currently the second most expensive football transfers of all time.

Mbappe is regarded as a generational talent after Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi and already became the youngest player to score in the World Cup final as France lifted the World Cup in 2018.

The young sensation also is the most expensive teenager of all time and PSG did make him one of the most expensive players as the player signed a new lucrative deal to fend off suitors.

Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool to FC Barcelona, €160M)

Barcelona shelled a coll 160 million to lure Phillipe Coutinho to Spain as the Spanish giants wanted to rival Real Madrid to have a major chunk of the major trophies. Coutinho had a decent start as he won two league titles to start with but what followed later was pretty disappointing for a player of his calibre.

The Brazilian had struggled to live up to the expectations and had a couple of loan stints at Bayern Munich in Bundesliga and Premier League side Aston Villa. He also was involved as Bayern routed Barcelona 8-0 in the Champions League which prompted their exit from the competition.

Coutinho completed a move to Aston Villa recently for a meagre fee as Barcelona failed to recoup the maximum of their spending on the player.

Joao Felix (Benfica to Atletico Madrid, €126m)

Joao Felix has been one of the most esteemed youngsters in European football and Atletico Madrid did break all the barriers when they brought the players to Spain for a mouthwatering €126 million Euros.

He has failed to justify his price tag so far as the Portuguese’s form has been pretty underwhelming in the last couple of seasons. Despite having the tag of one of the potential future big stars Felix hasn’t had any real impact at the Wanda Metropolitano and it remains to be seen how he performs in the upcoming seasons.

Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid to FC Barcelona, €120M)

Being one of Europe’s biggest clubs FC Barcelona have had the knack of snatching talents from all over the world and they repeated the same feat when they picked up Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid for a €120 million transfer fee.

The transfer didn’t make sense back then and it hasn’t helped FC Barcelona either. Griezmann has barely influenced a game for the Spanish giants and his illustrious career nearly faded at the Camp Nou.

The World Cup winner joined Atletico Madrid on loan last season and will also spend the next season at his former stomping ground.
