WI vs NZ, 1st ODI – MPL Fantasy Preview and Top Picks

Match: West Indies vs New Zealand, (WI vs NZ, 1st ODI)

Date: August 17, 2022 – 11:30 PM IST

Venue: Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados

After losing the T20I series to New Zealand but managing a consolation win in the last T20I, West Indies will now host the visitors for an ODI series starting August 17 at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown.

Not much has gone right for the West Indies in the recent past. Their last ODI win came against the Netherlands on June 4, after which they were whitewashed by India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. They have lost their last nine ODI matches on a trot and are subsequently placed ninth in the ICC ODI charts.

New Zealand, on the other hand, have won their last 11 limited-overs games. They have 11 wins in 11 white-ball matches against Scotland, Netherlands, and Ireland. They have also won their last five ODI games against West Indies, and their last ODI defeat came against Australia in March 2020.

For New Zealand, Matt Henry will miss the entire series after suffering a rib injury. He has been replaced by Ben Sears. For the West Indies, Shimron Hetmyer, Keemo Paul, Roston Chase and Gudakesh Motie have been ruled out.

Although West Indies lead New Zealand 30-28 in ODIs, they will be the team under pressure this time around. Ahead of the first ODI, let’s look at the head to head total of both points, pitch report, weather update and more.

Five players to watch out for in the WI vs NZ 1st ODI

Here we take a look at five key players you must pick in your MPL fantasy XI for WI vs NZ 1st ODI:

Shai Hope – batsman, West Indies

Shai Hope is the highest run-scorer for the West Indies in 2022 with 616 runs in 18 ODI innings. He recently scored a century against India, before which he scored a century against Pakistan as well. Hope has a brilliant average of almost 50 in his 101-match ODI career. He has hit 13 centuries and 20 fifties in the format. Another good pick would be Shamarh Brooks, the second leading run scorer for West Indies this year with 613 runs in 18 innings.

Akeal Hosein – bowler, West Indies

Akeal Hosein has taken the most ODI wickets for West Indies in 2022 (25 wickets in 17 matches). Not just in ODIs, he has done well in the T20I format in the last few series. Along with Hosein, Alzarri Joseph is also a good pick for your fantasy team. Joseph has 22 wickets in 14 matches this year.

Trent Boult – bowler, New Zealand

The star left-arm Kiwi pacer is just one wicket away from bringing up his 550th wicket for New Zealand. Only Richard Hadlee, Tim Southee and Daniel Vettori have more than 550 wickets. Boult is one of the best in the business and indispensable to your fantasy cricket team.

Kane Williamson – batsman, New Zealand

Kane Williamson has only played two ODIs since the World Cup Final, but remains important to your fantasy cricket team. One of New Zealand’s finest batsmen since Martin Crowe, Williamson has a batting average of 47.48 in 151 ODIs. He has hit 13 centuries in the format.

Devon Conway – batsman, New Zealand

Devon Conway has played some fine knocks in international cricket after his stint with CSK in the IPL 2022, where he scored 252 runs in seven matches at an average of 42.00 and a strike rate of 145.66. Conway has played only three ODI matches so far, from which he has an average of 75, and will now be looking to turn out more match-winning knocks in the upcoming series.
