Carrom is a popular indoor game that is also known as a ‘strike and pocket board game’. Traditional carrom is played on a square polished ply board with circular coins (black, white and red) and a circular striker. With the advent of technologies and extensive use of the Internet, the number of people playing carrom online is increasing day by day. The primary objective in carrom is to use the striker to hit the coins into any of the corner holes to score points.
In the professional mode, the platform randomly assigns a colour (black or white) to both players. The player assigned white is the one to start the game. In freestyle mode, the system randomly assigns a player to start the game.
The first shot of the game, which scatters the arranged pieces all over the board, is called ‘break’. Post the first shot, players take turns to hit their coins.
On the MPL App, the player can strike a coin by dragging the striker left to right in the strike area. Once the position is set, you can then adjust the power and the direction of the shot by dragging your finger and aiming at the coin you want to strike. The shot is taken when the finger is released.
It is important to note that the power should be adjusted according to the position of the coin. Too much power can result in the coin flicking back into the board and or the striker being pocketed instead of the coin. Pocketing a striker is deemed as a foul in carrom. This can result in a penalty, where the player must forfeit a turn as well lose one of his scored pieces. In freestyle carrom, the player mandatorily loses a white coin.
If the player scores a piece of the assigned colour, he/she is rewarded another turn. The turn doesn’t shift to the opponent until the player fails to bag a coin from his shot or one of the opponent's pieces is accidentally pocketed.
In professional carrom, the player who pots all his/her coins along with the queen is declared the winner. The player can also win the game if they fail to score the queen, but are the first to pocket all their coins on the board. In Freestyle carrom, the player who has the highest score when the board is out of coins is declared as the winner.
