Mumbai:

The five-time defending champions and the most successful team in the tournament, Team Mumbai has been a force to reckon with. They have won the league in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Rohit Sharma has been the captain of Mumbai each time they have been crowned champions, however, for IPL 2024, the franchise has named Hardik Pandya as their new captain. 

Chennai:

Before Mumbai went on a winning spree, Chennai was the most successful team in the T20 league. Chennai has won the Indian T20 league five times, with their fifth trophy coming in 2023. With MS Dhoni leading the way yet again, Chennai had qualified for the playoffs every season they were a part of up until 2020 (Chennai was banned for two years in 2016 & 2017). 

Kolkata:

Kolkata is third in terms of the most successful franchise in the Indian T20 Premier League. They won the coveted title twice - in 2012 and 2014, both times under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir. There has been a slight blip in their form over the last few years, but they are still very much a force to reckon with. Kolkata were the runners up in 2021 before the franchise brought in Shreyas Iyer at the helm. Iyer will be leading the side in IPL 2024. 

Hyderabad:

The team from Hyderabad came into existence only in 2012 but quickly found its bearings in the tournament. They won the Indian T20 premier league in 2016 and, with David Warner as captain. However, the team has undergone various changes with Warner and Kane Williamson, two of their most successful batsmen, now out of the side. Australia’s Pat Cummins will lead them.

Rajasthan:

The team from Rajasthan have been the perennial underdogs since the start of the Indian T20 League. They won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2008 but did not once made it to the final until 2022. They will be led by Sanju Samson once again as they look to repeat their performance.

Bangalore

With the kind of firepower Bangalore have had over the years, it is indeed a surprise that they do not have a single Indian t20 trophy to their name yet. In all these years, Bangalore, led by Virat Kohli, looks like a side that will certainly lift the title. But they haven't. Kohli stepped down from the captaincy role with RCB announcing Faf du Plessis as their new skipper. 

Delhi:

The Delhi team has never really lived up to their potential. They have had some of the biggest names in world cricket but never won the title. In what is a huge boost for them, the Capitals will be re-joined by Rishabh Pant in IPL 2024. The wicketkeeper batsman did not play the last season after meeting with a car accident. 

Punjab:

Team Punjab is one of the weakest teams in the competition, which has shown promise repeatedly but has usually been short-lived. The team has finished in the bottom half of the points table every season, barring 2008 and 2014 and is usually considered the weakest of all sides. Under new captain Mayank Agarwal, they will be looking for a chance in fortunes this year. 

Gujarat

The IPL 2022 winners, who lost the final of IPL 2023, will look to win their second title. Hardik Pandya has moved back to the Mumbai Indians, and the team will now be led by Shubman Gill. 

Lucknow

Lucknow Supergiants, owned by the RPSG Ventures, had a promising opening season in IPL 2022 where they reached the playoffs. KL Rahul's captaincy was an influencing factor for their first-ever season. Lucknow reached the playoffs in IPL 2023 too, and will be looking to maintain the momentum in IPL 2024.
