Team Mumbai Introduction

The most balanced team in the Indian T20 Premier League, according to many experts, Mumbai holds the record for most titles in the history of the tournament. Led by Rohit ‘Hitman’ Sharma, they have held the prestigious Indian T20 League trophy five times – 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. It is the defending champion and will be gunning for a sixth title come 2021. It won’t be beyond the team as well.

Mumbai has some of the best batsmen in Quinton de Kock, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, and Kieron Pollard. In Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard, Mumbai has two of the finest finishers with the bat, while Jasprit Bumrah, who leads the bowling attack, is arguably the best bowler in the format.

Mumbai has time and again backed its youngsters, a decision that has borne fruit to date. Whether or not Mumbai can achieve a treble remains to be seen. For now, the team has all the ammunition.

If there were a few ups and downs in 2019, Mumbai glided through the 2020 season with the utmost ease. It had a bit of a stutter at the start of the campaign as they went down to team Chennai but came back strong. The five times champions won 9 of their 14 group stage games to qualify for the playoffs in the first place. The team then brushed aside Delhi Qualifier 1 and then again in the final to become the first team in the league with five trophies.

Where the team currently stands:

Harbhajan Singh also led the side in 20 matches, while Ricky Ponting (6), Kieron Pollard (5), Shaun Pollock (4), Dwayne Bravo (1) have all been captains of Mumbai at some point. Currently, Rohit Sharma is Mumbai’s captain. He has led the team since 2013, and all of Mumbai’s title wins have come under Rohit.

Mahela Jayawardene is the head coach of the team. Robin Singh is the batting coach, Shane Bond the bowling coach, while James Pamment is the fielding coach. Former India head coach John Wright is Mumbai’s head of Talent Scouting.
