What is a Poker Set?

Poker Set

A poker set is essentially a poker kit that consists of different coloured poker chips, dice, and cards to play the game of poker. The poker kit includes all the right equipment required to enjoy a seamless poker experience. A traditional poker set often consists of the following:

  • 2 decks of playing cards
  • 500 poker chips in five different colors
  • A big blind, small blind, and a dealer button
  • A tray organizer or rack for the chips
  • An interior cushioning to protect the equipment
  • 5 dice

Different varieties of poker set may include different number of poker chips, card decks, and dice. Some poker sets also consist of a gaming mat and a table cloth. These poker sets are usually ideal for playing poker between 6 to 10 players.

Poker Set History

The poker games were popularly played with real money even in the earlier times. Therefore, the games involved exchange of cash. As the poker games grew in popularity, coins and paper money became an essential part of the game. This is where poker chips gained relevance and players began to use them as a replacement for real cash in poker games around the world. The powerful new currency along with the other accessories required to play a game of poker, contributed to the modern poker set. Today, most poker players buy a poker game set to play poker with other players in their homes.

What are Coloured Plagues?

Coloured Plagues

The poker games that require larger denominations of poker chips use the concept of coloured poker plagues. A poker plague is a rectangular object that is used as a poker chip in the later stages of poker tournaments. When you buy a poker game set online, the plaques come in different colors.

What is the Value of Poker Chips in a Poker Set?

A poker kit consists of poker chips in different colors. Since the colors don’t necessarily have a pre-assigned value, the house usually sets the denominations or value for each color at the beginning of the game. The denominations can differ from game to game; therefore, it is not necessary for players to remember the denominations. The usual value of different colors of poker chips in a poker set is as follows:

White

The white poker chips in a poker kit hold the lowest value. The value of the white poker chips is often equal to the lowest bet/wager (small blind)  in the game.

Pink

The pink poker chips hold the second-lowest value in a poker set. The value of the pink poker chips is often equal to the big blind amount.

Red

The value of the red poker chips is usually twice the value of the big blind.

Blue

The value of thr blue chips is between 3x to 5x of the big blind.

Yellow

The value of the yellow chips acts as a change system for the time when the white chips are over.

Black

The balue of the black chips is double the value of the yellow chips.

As the poker set doesn’t come with a predefined value for the chips, the organizers of the game assign the value to the poker chips based on the stakes, blind levels, and the type of poker game.

Determining Chip Denominations and Colors in a Poker Kit

The poker chips of different colors represent money in poker cash games and poker tournaments. The poker chips are assigned denominations by the house/organizer based on the stakes involved and other factors. Here’s how you can use the poker kit to determine chip denominations:

For instance, you are playing a poker cash game with a Rs. 500 buy-in.

  • Choose four colours from your poker set and allocate these denominations to a colour of your choice, starting with blinds at 1/2.
  • The lowest denomination is the value of the small blind, ie, Rs. 1.
  • The second denomination is a multiplier and average bet value, ie, Rs. 5.
  • The third denomination is a larger multiplier such as 20x. Ie. Rs. 20.
  • The fourth denomination is the highest value denomination, ie, Rs. 100

When it comes to the buy-in amount, it's critical to comprehend how these chip denominations are distributed. The starting stack that you can create from your poker set, assuming that a player buys in at this cash table for Rs. 500, will be as follows

  • White chips - Rs. 1 each, so 50 chips equal Rs. 50
  • Red chips - Rs. 5 each, so 30 chips equal Rs. 150
  • Green chips - Rs. 20 each, so 10 chips equal Rs. 200
  • Blue chips - Rs. 100 each, so 1 chip equals Rs. 100

The lowest denominations of your poker set have no value and must be exchanged for a chip denomination of a higher value when the blind levels rise throughout the course of the game of poker. Adding progressive higher denominations by using a new chip colour from your poker set is referred to as "chipping up” in poker.

One must keep in mind that chip values do not equal real money when planning a poker event as a player. The starting stack is predetermined for a tournament buy-in for each player. Players play to collect the most chips and survive the round. A player is either eliminated from the game or finishes in a position that pays a set prize when they run out of chips, though. In poker tournaments, the value of the chips in your hand has no bearing on the total prize money.

As players advance through a tournament, lower value chips may be "coloured off," similar to a cash game, and new coloured chips with higher denominations may enter from your poker set. Here's an example of how to give your poker set denominations for a poker tournament:

  • White - 25
  • Red - 50
  • Orange - 100
  • Yellow - 500
  • Green - 1,000
  • Black - 5,000
  • Purple - 10,000
