According to several theories, the origin of rummy was either Mexico or China in the 19th century. The game was called Conquian in the book Foster’s Complete Hoyle by RF Foster and was played using a Spanish deck of 40 cards.

Mexican - Chinese Connection

Other theories circle around rummy being originated in Asia from the Mahjongg variant called Kun P’ai. In 1981, WH Wilkinson westernised the Kun P’ai game and named it Khanhoo. On the other hand, David Parlett, a games scholar, stated that the ancestral rummy game, Conquian, is equivalent to the Chinese game of Khanhoo.
