Based in Bangalore, RCB was one of the original 8 teams that took part in the inaugural season of IPL in 2008. Perhaps, very few IPL franchises can match the strong fan following of RCB. As a fan, you would want to know your team inside out. Even the minor details and people associated with a particular IPL franchise are heavily discussed amongst IPL enthusiasts. In such times, amongst the commonly discussed questions during the last year, one has been, who is the owner of RCB 2025? For the IPL 2025 season, the common question for this Bangalore franchise will be ‘who is the owner of Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2025?’.
If you are a Royal Challengers Bangalore fan, keep reading further to know who is RCB owner and a few more details on the RCB team.
United Spirits founded RCB and named the franchise after its brand Royal Challenge. Previously, Vijay Mallya was the chairman and non-executive director of Royal Challengers Bangalore, followed by Mahendra Kumar Sharma. The chairman of the IPL cricket franchise RCB in 2021 was Anand Kripalu, who was also the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of United Spirits Limited. The chairman of United Spirits Limited in 2022 was Amrit Thomas. The first owner of RCB was Vijay Mallya who had purchased the team for USD $111.6 million in 2008.
As of 2024, Prathmesh Mishra is the Chief Commercial Officer at United Spirits Ltd and the chairman of RCB.
Vijay Mallya – RCB Director from 2008-2016
When BCCI announced the IPL in 2007, Vijay Mallya bought Royal Challengers Bangalore with a bid of US $111.6 million. He owned popular Indian alcoholic beverage companies – liquor brands such as Royal Challenge and McDowell’s which he wanted to associate with RCB. Evidently, RCB was named after the brand Royal Challenge. United Spirits has been the parent company of RCB from the beginning, however, Vijay Mallya was known to be the owner of RCB until 2016. Because of the regular presence of Vijaya Mallya and his son in RCB’s matches, people usually associated him as the owner of Royal Challengers Bangalore. On 25 February 2016, Mallya resigned as the director of Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited.
How much does the owner of RCB earn from IPL?
In the fiscal period 2018-2019, the RCB owner, United Spirits made a net profit of INR 143 crores. In comparison to the total operating profit of United Spirits Limited, the profit was more than 10% of that. According to a survey by Duff & Phelps, the net worth of RCB was estimated to be INR 595 crore in 2019. Due to no home matches in 2020, the team’s revenue from the fans attending the matches was expected to dip in IPL 2021. However, the franchise’s owners don’t seem to be quite affected by the dismal performance of the team in the previous years.
This has only increased in the last few years. As reported by MoneyControl in March 2023, the company recorded a gross revenue of INR 27,577.50 crore and a net revenue of INR 10,373.70 crore from their previous fiscal year.
Royal Challengers Bangalore Team History
In the history of IPL, the RCB franchise has never won the title in any season. However, the team has been the runners-up thrice between 2009 and 2016. Despite strong players in the team like Virat Kohli, Yuzvendra Chahal, etc, the team has not been able to taste success and has earned a tag of ‘underachievers’. You will find more about this in How many times have RCB won IPL.
In the 2017 season, RCB hit the lowest point managing a winning rate of 21.42%. That was also the season where they recorded the lowest total in the history of IPL – 49 against KKR.
IPL 2024 started disastrously for RCB where they lost six games in a row, but they bounced back really well to miraculously make it to the playoffs. Their final group stage win against CSK was stuff of legend.
The IPL team has always had a stronghold on the batting line-up with some of the best players of the world, but haven’t had much luck even after coming very close to the title. Their bowling attack seems to be the reason behind them losing a good match.

The IPL 2025 season will certainly be interesting as always and we will wait to see if 2025 is the year when RCB wins their first IPL trophy.
