United Spirits founded RCB and name the franchise after its brand Royal Challenge. Previously, Vijay Mallya was the chairman and non-executive director of Royal Challengers Bangalore, followed by Mahendra Kumar Sharma. When BCCI announced the IPL in 2007, Vijay Mallya bought Royal Challengers Bangalore with a bid of US $111.6 million. Evidently, RCB was named after the brand Royal Challenge. United Spirits has been the parent company of RCB from the beginning, however, Vijay Mallya was known to be the owner of RCB until 2016. On 25 February 2016, Mallya resigned as the director of Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited.
