The owner of RCB is United Spirits Limited, which is the largest Indian alcoholic beverage company. United Spirits is a subsidiary of Diageo which is based in London. United Spirits founded RCB and name the franchise after its brand Royal Challenge. Previously, Vijay Mallya was the chairman and non-executive director of Royal Challengers Bangalore, followed by Mahendra Kumar Sharma. The chairman of the IPL cricket franchise RCB in 2021 was Anand Kripalu, who was also the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of United Spirits Limited. Vijay Mallya – RCB Director from 2008-2016
When BCCI announced the IPL in 2007, Vijay Mallya bought Royal Challengers Bangalore with a bid of US $111.6 million. He owned popular Indian alcoholic beverage companies – liquor brands such as Royal Challenge and Mcdowell’s which he wanted to associate with RCB. Evidently, RCB was named after the brand Royal Challenge. United Spirits has been the parent company of RCB from the beginning, however, Vijay Mallya was known to be the owner of RCB until 2016. Because of the regular presence of Vijaya Mallya and his son in RCB’s matches, people usually associated him as the owner of Royal Challengers Bangalore. On 25 February 2016, Mallya resigned as the director of Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited.
How much does the owner of RCB earn from IPL?
In the fiscal period 2018-2019, the RCB owner, United Spirits made a net profit of INR 143 crores. In comparison to the total operating profit of United Spirits Limited, the profit was more than 10% of that. According to a survey by Duff & Phelps, the net worth of RCB was estimated to be INR 595 crore in 2019. Due to no home matches in 2020, the team’s revenue from the fans attending the matches was expected to dip in IPL 2021. However, the franchise’s owners don’t seem to be quite affected by the dismal performance of the team in the previous years.
Royal Challengers Bangalore Team History
In the history of IPL, the RCB franchise has never won the title in any season. However, the team has been the runners-up thrice between 2009 and 2016. Despite strong players in the team like Captain Virat Kohli, Yuzvendra Chahal, etc, the team has not been able to taste success and has earned a tag of ‘underachievers’. You will find more about this in How many times have RCB won IPL.
2011 has been a good season for RCB as they had an impressive winning rate of 62.5% under the leadership of Virat Kohli and Daniel Vettori. in the 2017 season, RCB hit the lowest point win a winning rate of 21.42%. Therefore, the team holds a record of both the lowest and highest totals in IPL.
The IPL team has always had a stronghold on the batting line-up with some of the best players of the world, but haven’t had much luck even after coming very close to the title. Their bowling attack seems to be the reason behind them losing a good match.
