In the seventh match of IPL 2022 against Lucknow Super Giants, Chennai Super Kings scored 73 for 1 inside the first six overs. It is the highest Powerplay score in IPL so far this season. Robin Uthappa starred with a gob-smacking 50 off 27 deliveries and he was well supported by Moeen Ali, who scored 35 off 22. It was their 56-run partnership in only 30 balls that gave CSK a solid platform in the match. However, it is only their fourth-highest Powerplay score in IPL history.
What is the Powerplay and why is it so important you ask? In the first six overs of any T20 match, only two fielders are permitted outside the 30-yard circle. This essentially gives batsmen a free license to hit powerful aerial shots with a lesser risk factor. This mandatory six-over period is called the powerplay.
Getting off to a great start in the powerplay has become extremely important in the shortest format of the sport. A good powerplay performance essentially sets the tone for the rest of the match. Teams that get off to a flying start in the first six overs are well-positioned to cross the 200-run mark.
Bowlers are also constantly thinking of ways to fool the opposition batsmen during this period. They are well aware that they will be punished if they bowl loose deliveries which makes them step up with their performances. Fast bowlers are usually utilized inside the powerplay while some captains have also used spin bowlers on several occasions inside the first six overs to remain a step ahead of the opposition.
With that being said, let’s take a look at the list of teams with the highest Powerplay score in the Indian Premier League history:
Highest Powerplay score in IPL: Top 5 list
|Kolkata Knight Riders||Royal Challengers Bangalore||105/0||2017|
|Chennai Super Kings||Punjab Kings||100/2||2014|
|Chennai Super Kings||Mumbai Indians||90/0||2015|
|Kochi Tuskers Kerala||Rajasthan Royals||87/2||2011|
|Punjab Kings||Sunrisers Hyderabad||86/1||2014|
Kolkata Knight Riders – 105/0 vs RCB, IPL 2017
In the 46th match of IPL 2017 against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders led by openers Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn made history. They scored 105/0 in the first six overs to register the highest powerplay score in IPL history.
Despite chasing a modest target of 159 set by Royal Challengers Bangalore, Knight Riders took the opposition and the audience by surprise by pressing their foot on the accelerator from the very first over. Australian batter Chris Lynn scored 28 runs across the first two overs while West Indies all-rounder Sunil Narine smashed 26 runs in the fourth over of the innings.
By the end of the powerplay, Sunil Narine had scored 54 runs off only 16 balls and reached his half-century in just 15 deliveries. It was the joint-fastest half-century in IPL history back then. Chris Lynn, on the other end, had added 49 off 20 balls.
The pair also helped themselves to eight sixes during the first two overs. To this date, it is the joint record for the most sixes scored in the first six overs of an IPL innings.
Chennai Super Kings – 100/2 vs PBKS, IPL 2014
Back in 2014, Chennai Super Kings had set the record for the highest powerplay score in IPL history with their fantastic effort against Punjab Kings who were called Kings XI Punjab back then.
The match proved to be a run-fest from the word go. Virender Sehwag’s majestic century helped Kings XI Punjab and 232/6 was the score after the first batting teams’ innings.
Chennai Super Kings were aware of the fact that they required a strong start in the powerplay to chase such a huge target but that got complicated when they lost a couple of wickets. However, it did not discourage Suresh Raina who launched an incredible counter-attack and played one of the most jaw-dropping knocks in the history of the league.
Raina smashed 87 off only 25 deliveries in the powerplay at a mind-boggling strike rate of 348. He also smacked a grand total of 8 sixes over the course of the innings. It is, to this day, the most runs scored by a single batsman during the powerplay overs. To put that into more context, only two teams have scored more runs than him in the powerplay of an IPL match!
Chennai Super Kings – 90/0 vs MI, IPL 2015
Chennai Super Kings’ ruthless dominance in the IPL also reflects on this list as they appear twice here. The famous Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai was the seat of carnage as CSK played cleverly and allowed free reins to both their furious openers Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Bravo. This time, Suresh Raina watched the entire event unfold with his feet up at the dugout.
McCullum and Bravo smashed 90 runs in the first six overs as Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh conceded 61 runs between the fourth and sixth overs. Jagadeesha Suchith was also on the end of the hammering as, he too, conceded three boundaries. This confident start helped CSK chase down a score of 184 with 20 balls left in hand.
Kochi Tuskers Kerala – 87/2 vs RR, IPL 2011
Going back to 2011, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, who were introduced to the league that season, created a record for the highest powerplay score in the IPL which stood for another three years before being broken by CSK in 2014.
In their final game of the league phase, which was also coincidentally their last match in IPL. Kochi Tuskers Kerala demolished Rajasthan Royals in a thoroughly one-sided affair. Having taken his career-best bowling figures in the first innings and cleaning them up for just 97, Brad Hodge partnered with Brendon McCullum to score the most runs in the powerplay of an IPL match.
Hodge smashed 25 in 12 balls while McCullum smacked 29 from 12 deliveries. Although they won the match by a comprehensive margin, Kochi failed to qualify for the playoffs in their first and only IPL season.
Punjab Kings – 86/1 vs SRH, IPL 2014
Chasing a score of over 200 with the likes of Dale Steyn and Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowling in their prime does sound one of the most challenging situations in a T20 contest. However, Kings XI Punjab (later rechristened to Punjab Kings) were unfazed by the challenge. Despite losing dynamic opener Virender Sehwag early, Manan Vohra and Wriddhiman Saha smashed the ball to every part of the ground.
Wriddhiman scored 52 from 23 while Manan added 29 off 11 deliveries. They stitched together 91 runs off 41 deliveries and 86 of those came inside the first six overs. In the end, the powerplay sprint proved to be the difference between the two teams as Punjab went on to win the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have also been on another end of this spectrum. They hold the record for the joint lowest powerplay scores in IPL history along with Rajasthan Royals. They could only manage a score of 14/2 in their first match of IPL 2022 against Rajasthan Royals.
